Below is off the ATA website. I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts were.

We only go Saturday to Saturday. Too bad it wasn't announced sooner, our vacation requests had to be submitted back in February and we didn't inlude extra days for this.

SAN ANTONIO, TX, APRIL 11, 2012: The ATA Executive Committee
has announced that an additional $100,000 in added money will be
provided by the Association at this year’s 2012 Grand American
World Trapshooting Championship, Sparta Illinois. The decision
was made at the just completed spring meetings of the ATA
Executive Committee during the Southwestern Satellite Grand
American at the National Shooting Complex, San Antonio Texas.
The addition of the funds to the championship tournament was
made to compliment the $350,000 in added money already in place,
donated by Bill and Lee Ann Martin for Championship week events
at the Grand American. The ATA added money will feature a Lewis
option with an entry fee of $100 offered on the cumulative total
of events of 7 through 14 (Friday-Saturday-Sunday) of
preliminary week. $50,000 will be added by the ATA to the total
entries in this purse on the total of 900 targets, and will be
paid back in 5 Lewis divisions, split 50-30-20% (15 separate
scores will win). The remaining $50,000 added by the ATA will
be added to the Lewis option purses for the 8 events scheduled
    for August 10-12:
$5,000 will be added to Friday’s Michelob Lite Singles
$8,000 will be added to Friday’s Budweiser Handicap
$5,000 will be added to Friday’s Bud Light Doubles
$6,000 will be added to Saturday-Sunday’s NRA Singles
$8,000 will be added to Saturday’s Krieghoff 100 Handicap
$5,000 will be added to Saturday’s RIO Ammo Doubles
$8,000 will be added to Sunday’s Blaser Handicap
$5,000 will be added to Sunday’s Wenig Doubles
Each Lewis option on these events will be divided 5 divisions,
    60-40% each division.

I kinda wonder how the members not attending feel about 100K of their daily fees being spent this way?

    Paul,

The Grand made a "profit" of $250k last year.

We are just putting that money back into the Grand.

The $200k Lewis option resulted in increased participation in the Grand Week events. Most notably in the doubles events. That increased participation was what drove the Grand profit.

Basically what we are doing here is using that same approach for Preliminary Week. Hopefully we will see a similar increase in participation for Preliminary Week.

    It's worth a try.

    Paul in Mn,

I have a problem with the EC raising our daily fees so it can go to feed the pros. This is beyond just a mandatory purse. This is a forced donation to a purse in which most of us will not be participating.

I understand the need for a larger purse at the grand. Without the 350k donation the grand would have fallen on its face last year.

Now all shooters will be donating.....not just the Martins.

Joe, that's why they call it 'The Grand' ... and it is happening at the very best place to shoot American trap, ever.

Maybe you ought to go and get some of your fees money back?

It is just a little west of where you are now, and is a nice drive.

Does anyone know if the EC met to change the rules of the ATA?

    A. COMPULSORY PURSES
No compulsory purse and/or option of any type shall be permitted
in any tournament in which ATA trophies or ATA added monies are
    provided.

I have to assume the EC changed the above rule.

This is a GREAT move on the ATA's part and I appreciate what you (EC) are doing.

Fact #1: This is NOT a compulsory purse. You can elect not to play. (DUH)
Fact #2: This is a VERY popular purse and the majority WILL elect to play as shown in last years "Martin" Lewis.
Fact #3: The ATA is utilizing "OUR" funds to promote our sport via the Grand as it should. This is THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP OF TRAPSHOOTING!
Fact #4: You clowns on here whine that the ATA does nothing and when the ATA does do something you whine more.
Fact #5: A HUGE thanks to all the EC and other volunteers that make our sport great. A shoot like THE GRAND could never take place without volunteers.
Fact #6: This is a GREAT way to increase participation and awarness of our sport.

There should be no soft debate

    Just calculate it out

    you have $450,000 dollars

You know what the number of shooters playing the game are- and what are the amounts they are paying

You also should be able to research what the numbers were before this $450,000

Bottom line- what did the $450,000 gain you

    Forget words and terms

    Regards from Iowa

    Just a question

If the ATA has to much money and feels it has to give some of it back.

Why did they raise the daily fees???

I actually thought it might be worth a shot, what they are trying to do. My problem with it is to announce it this late in the game makes it extremely difficult for someone that has to submit vacation by a certain time of the year. I am sure that we are not the only ones in the ATA that have to submit vacation in late winter/early spring.

How can someone complain about the ATA putting more money into the Grand American? I don't get it. Out here in the West it is not too far from the truth to say that the "VET" class is becoming the largest class at the shoot. There are not many shooters in their twenties and thirties.
Sporting clays has taken many shooters that perhaps would otherwise shoot trap. What does trap have over sporting clays? Money!................The more they put in the Grand the better, in my opinion.

    Lyle,

Who do you mean by "they?"

Are you talking about the noobs that wont shoot the grand this year? How much should the youth shooters donate to the big dogs purses?

There are a lot of entry shooters that cannot afford the grand's high cost of motels and traveling to and from the grand to their rooms. Are those the people that you need to donate more?

Are you saying that like it or not you want to shoot for a piece of someone else's money?

Isn't forcing someone to donate to a purse compulsory?

Thanks Lyle, I would like to hear your answer.

How many active members does the ATA have, and how many will attend that weekend?

A small number of members will have a chance to benefit from this "investment" for attendance.

I'm planning to attend this year, but I have mixed feelings about this.
