After a 2 week break from shooting, I noticed I'm hearing conversations behind me from people in the crowd when I should be concentrating on targets.

The last time I had my hearing checked the technician said she'd never seen such good hearing.

Looking for options, thinking some white noise might help. Some folks wear sight blinders. I need something for my hearing.

    Your experience?

    Thanks,
    Joe

    Joe,

Even with custom ear plugs I have the same issue as you do. When I score for a squad I wear ear muffs, helps a little bit but the problem is still there. Have had it for as long as I can remember.

My problem is caused by using my ears to do my job and have learned how to listen for what's not supposed to be there. Hard to unlearn. Perhaps you should look into custom ear plugs with speakers so you can plug into an ipod music player.

Unless you have the expensive electronic ear plugs, that's the sign that
    your current plugs aren't working.

The young man who made my current set of molded plugs believes that to be effective, the plug has to extend beyond the second curve in the ear canal. And he is right - I can barely hear the scorer and my own gun sounds like popcorn popping. It's also amazing how quieter guns seem to kick less.

I use the Electronic muffs when around noisy people.

I bought a pair and got a pair free and gave those to my son.

Hmmm, I wonder why one type of noise would bother someone and another even louder noise wouldn't? Somethings askew here and should be figgered out boys.

I wonder why this phenom isn't talked about by the top dogs more than it is? Are they deaf like me and have CHS too?

My vendor is Bryan Allen in Mechanicsburg, southcentral Pennsylvania. He is a dealer for Insta-Mold but he is the first Insta-Mold dealer I've patronized who makes his plugs that way. I think if you told any molded plug dealer you want them to extend past the second bend in the canal, they could make them that way.

I used to shoot with molded ear plugs and high grade Browning muffs over them. I could not hear the scorekeeper and people ad to touch my shoulder to get my attention. Jack

If I had my druthers I would not be able to hear anything on the line. I hate to hear the hog callers on the next trap setting off my trap and/or more, I find that terribly distracting. I have electronic muffs I use for Sporting Clays but I use regular muffs and plugs when shooting trap.
