This happened to me yesterday on the 28 Gauge Society site. How is this possible and is there anything I can do?

    Thanks,

    Don Verna

I'm a member over there and saw the discussion thread on this...I don't know what to make of it. The site admin does not give any real details on how he allegedly tracked you down as being the "hacker" so who knows why he accused you of being this "hacker". I would just register under another name if you want to post over there....

Don the term could be used by someone who really doesn't know what "hacking" is. Just visiting a site when one hasn't been there before isn't hacking into a site. Getting into and changing the site without being authorized to do so is considered hacking. It's illegal to do that and if that is what happened to the site the one who did it usually leaves a dead end trail. Sometimes that trail is to the account of one who doesn't have a clue another is using their account to do so. Dan

    sernv99,

Until I know more about how this could happen and how to "protect" myself I am not interested in posting at that site. There is a problem and it is not me. With me gone, who will get "tagged" next?

Someone is playing games. I have a suspect but not proof.

Dan is trying his best, but he is not capable of dealing with it. He believes I am the hacker and does not want to look any further.

My main purpose in posting here is to find out if this can happen to me on other forums I participate in and how to minimize my risk. Secondly, can someone offer advice that would help Dan secure his site. Dan will likely ignore any "advice" coming from me. If something comes up, you may wish to pass it on to him via PM.

Don---I would say anyone or any site that makes unwarrented claims like that is somewhere you should probably stay away from. Why would you have anything to gain from such a deed? You would have nothing to gain from doing that if you did know how. Accusations like that are slander without proof. Stay away from them. Your one of the last people i would accuse of such things.

    Dan,

My understanding is that forum content is being altered making some posters look bad. I had one of my posts altered as well. This is another reason I will not post there until I know more. If anything posted can be altered, it will be a mess.

One of the members has threatened legal action. I should be easy to find as I post me real name and have posted my ATA number too. Yep, I must be the dumbest hacker in the world. Even CSI Haiti should be able to track me down.

Don Make sure you run a thorough scan of your computer with up to date anti-virus software that checks for Trojan horses and other worms and such. It is possible that someone may have infected your computer and is using it as the means to enter other sites. While it may not be "you" it could be your computer without you even knowing.

Chip King, good advice. I do a lot of posting from work and we should have good protection but one never knows.

    Matt,
    Thanks for the kind words.

Ran Spybot. Found some "cookies" and "fixed" them. Also found something called Zango (adware). Laptop seems to be OK except for a PUP (potentially unwanted Program) called BBGW - Big Boobs Gone Wild. Unwanted???? It seemed like something interesting (computers are dumb or mine is female) so I kept it. Still figuring out how to open the damn thing. Must be hooked at the front.

If I start writing excellent prose with perfect grammar and spelling you will know it is not me. If I start to agree with Trinketshooter, it is not me. If I report MEC's are the best reloader, it is not me.

These are signs I am infected and delirious. So cut me little slack.

Waiting for the Internet Nazi's to drag me to jail.

A side story...got a call from my internet service provider the other day saying that if I did not stop sending out well over 1,000 ads a day for Viagra from my computer they were going to cut off my service. Took me a bit to stop laughing then after a short conversation he realized my computer had been taken over and was mailing this stuff out without my knowledge. Pretty easy fix but I was upset after sending out all those ads that my computer didn't even give me some free samples.

Don---Those were not kind words i gave you. I simply meant that you were not smart enough to hack any site.

    LOL

I'm joking. Hope you get it straightened out. Do you think you got the bad files from that site to start with?

    Don,

I think that 28 gauge society website is compromised by some type of hacker/virus....I tried logging in just now and I got a server authentication warning.

Something there is not on the up and up. I have decided to not check it out anymore. I have a pretty secure computer set up thanks to the nerds at work but why risk it?

Most of the guys on the forum were great and it was a friendly place - a lot tamer than TS.com. Really sad that some jerk has decided to destroy it. It was nice to have a forum dedicated to the "little" gun. The 28 ga is a great upland game gun within its limits.

    Thanks for the update.

All it takes is someone knowing how most admin access pages are structured for the URL, plus a weak admin password, making a recipe for trouble. Then the admin or owner starts barking up the wrong tree. Whether that's the case or not in this situation, who knows? But it would not surprise me.
