bear was walking across Rainbow Bridge (Old Hwy 40 at Donner Summit,

Truckee) on Saturday when two cars also crossing the bridge scared

the bear into jumping over the edge of the bridge. Somehow the bear

caught the ledge and was able to pull itself to safety.

    Authorities

decided that nothing could be done to help Saturday night so they

returned Sunday morning to find the bear sound asleep on the ledge.

After securing a net under the bridge the bear was tranquilized,

fell into the net, lowered, then woke up and walked out of the net.

The railing overhangs the bridge frame quite a bit. If he jumped or climbed over the railing, he'd never get to the support beam. I'd say the bear climbed the arch and got around the intermediate beams by his claws shown on the first pic. Determined bear? Coordinated bear? Dumb bear? Cool pics however.

wonder how much it cost to save Yogi?

In California they don't care about the costs. Anything to feel warm and fuzzy. I am glad I left that idiot state.

I have to agree with Setterman, I have had this emailed to me, seen on msn, and about everywhere I can imagine. I have driven over the bridge in question and based on those pictures, I can't help but believe this bear is tied to the old saw about the bear that went over the mountain, except he got half was across and some do gooder interupted his weekend stay form a perch with a great view.
It is pretty hard to imagine how that bugger got over the edge and back into that beam.
