A friend of mine is having a rough spell right now with business being slow so I took this gun off his hands for some spending cash. I have never seen one before and was wondering if someone knew the background on the 878 Automaster. The gun is very clean with no damage on the wood. There is some blueing wear and some light pitting on the receiver. It has a 30" barrel, fixed mod, w/no rib. Are they rare? When and how long were they produced? Value?

Funny this gun is brought up. I was at my local club last night and our director had a box for one of these he found when he bought a bought a bunch of gun boxes. He couldnt figure out what the gun was either so we looked it up in a gun values book. Evidently they where produced for 2 years in the 50's with a production run of approx 26,000 guns.

My wife shot clay targets for several years with an 870 with an 878 barrel.
I think they were at least part 870 and part auto. I can only attest to the bbl.but it was a good one.

The interesting thing about the 878 is that some gunsmiths used to alter 870 pump barrels to function on the 878. The difference is that the 878 barrel has gas ports. Some old gunsmiths used to convert 870 barrels to work on the 878, but it appears all of them have retired.

To me it looks like the gun was made for small game hunting. I haven't found anyone who knows what a decent one is worth.

There have been a few in the last year on gunbroker in the $150 range, but in all fairness these are in 80% condition, and one had almost no blueing on the receiver.
