Like a square peg in a round hole. 800-X is a bit slow for 1 ounce loads.

800X is a powder with similar usage profile to Blue Dot. It would be more appropriate for magnum pistols and heavy shotgun loads very few target shotgun loads for 800x.

I beg to differ. 800X is a GREAT 1 oz. powder - in 20 gauge LOL.

When 800X was first introduced, the loading data for 1 oz loads with this powder looked really great so I bought 8 pounds. After shooting 50 rounds, I sold the rest of the powder to a duck hunter. The stuff is very good for duck loads but very poor for the first shot of doubles.

Pat and I were no doubt misled by the same two-issue paean to 800-X by Don Zutz in Shooting Trap. It was the most perfect, most wonderful, most-whatever powder ever discovered by man.

I think I actually got 12 pounds rather then Pat's conservative 8 - how could I go wrong? This powder was going to guide each pellet, individually, to its intended mark.

In contrast to Don's promises, I dropped amazingly unevenly, left half unburned in the barrel, sounded like sonic booms, and had more squib loads in a pound or two than all the other shells I've shot put together.

Even the tomatoes tasted bitter but maybe ten pounds was too much fertilizer and my loading guide didn't have any section for that. If we'd had TS.com in those days, I could have asked and been told:

    1. that I had to use a scale

    2. would do better if I threw away a different powder

    3. if I did it, I was risking deflagrating the earth's atmosphere though HMB would have predicted detonation instead. And Ivanhoe would have advised, of course, that I was already virtually a dead man for even thinking of it.

    Neil,

You definately had detonation, as evidensed by the sonic boom. HMB
