Have a friend who wants to get back into reloading after 15 years and he has some left over powder , flake type with yellow markers. He has only loaded shotshells and thinks it maybe 700x. I've already told him to dump it into his wife's flowerbed but he won't listen so any idea what powder this is? Trying to be considerate of the poor devils shooting next to him. Jay
The yellow markers were generally associated with Dupont (now IMR). You have the best solution for his problem, have him get rid of it! It's 15 years old and can not be positively identified, that's a recipe for disaster. Tell him to bite the bullet and stop being cheap.
Did someone say?

You guys should be ashamed of yourselves, the man stutters a bit and you should not make fun of him. It's kinda like that hopey changey crap that we heard over and over in the last election scam! SHAME ON US............
Yellow markers is 700X and nothing else. Give it a sniff test. If it smells like vinegar put in on your garden. If it smells sweet like ether load a box at 15.5 grains and shoot it. 15.5 grains of nitroglycerine won't hurt anything.
One other point, storing gun powder or any other accelerant in an unmarked container is not real bright.
Dump it and get some powder in a sealed and marked container. I've seen some salvaged powder that had colored dots, but I doubt it was what the colored dots would have suggested. It's not worth the chance of injury and/or gun damage to try using it up.
Shoot it up. As long as it has been air tight and away from any moisture it will be fine. Get a scale out and weight it for what every load you will want. If the powder is bad, the shell with not go off. alfermann66 is right on with the smell test. There should not be any risk of blowing anything up because old powder does not get stronger. I am lookng at an Alliant Powder guide from the 2001 Grand. The ad show a glass jar of powder. IT talks about RED DOT being nearly a century old and stills performs to its original specs.
