Anybody see a published (by the powder companies) 7/8 oz load in Fed Papers w/ 1180-1200 velocity? All I'm finding are much faster than that. Thanks for any input.

The light load of shot requires a little more horsepower to make the load consistent. Even with plastic hulls, STS or AA or the many others, my chronograph says you just might need 1225 fps or better to generate enough internal pressure in the shell to have a reliable burn of powder and result in consistent velocity. Think about it; you can reduce recoil by using the paper shells, less powder than in "standard" loads, or reduce the payload weight that must be discharged out the barrel. Doing all three will reduce the pressure too far. With your hull, Hodgdon reommends at least 1250 fps loads for the resulting pressure only in the 7000 to 8000 psi range. Your components in a 1 oz load will only generate 6400 psi and it would be much less in 7/8 oz loads - not enough.....breakemall....Bob Dodd

    What Bob said.

From Federal and Alliant using Fed. 209A and 12SO wad:

    21 gr American Select - 1325 fps - 7700 PSI
    21 gr Titewad - 1325 fps - 7200 PSI
    20.5 gr Red Dot - 1325 fps - 8200 PSI

    Shoot well, Milt

Well, you needn't go all that far, however. Just switching to STS hulls, for example, you can stick to 17.1 gr. of clays, Win. 209s, and AA 12L or CB clone wad with 7/8 oz loads generating 8100 psi and 1200 fps according to Hodgdon. That very load has been quite reliable for 16s, short sporting and 5 stand, and skeet in my experience, including a number of 100s at 16 yards.....Bob Dodd

I agree, Bob, but he specifically asked about Fed. papers, and 7/8ths loadings in those hulls is fairly rare (or at least hard to find). Large internal volume, light payload. I have used Am Select at 19.5 gr in 1oz loads at 1200 fps, but, as you say, low pressure..... Be well, Milt

Never thought to doubt you Milt, just wanted him to consider all the potentials.

BTW sir hitapair, if you'd consider 700X or the Red Dot mudbug mentions, I've loaded 7/8 oz in the STS or AA shells, and seen just 16.5 grains of 700X perform quite well at down to 1190/1210fps; some of my most consistent chrono readings. I'm sure the Red Dot would work similarly....Bob Dodd
