Try the above website. Winchester discontinued 540 years ago. Hodgon HS-6 is the replacement, and even the Hodgdon website says HS-6 is identical to Winchester's discontinued 540 powder.

In 12 gauge it is used mostly for ounce and a quarter loads. For long distance game shooting it worked great for me. AA or STS hull, Winchester primer, 33 grains of 540, 1-1/4 ounce of 6s, WAA12F114 wad. Now that is one bird crunching load, kicks a little, but I only used em when we went passed the 40 yard line.

Win 540 is the exact same stuff as Hodgdon HS-6, and 540/HS-6 has always been a 'heavy', a slow powder more suitable for buckshot, slugs and duck, goose and coyote loads.

Hodgdon lists a couple of 1¼oz lead loads for Rem 2¾" hulls.

Also great for 1oz 20 ga loads. Lots of IPSC pistol shooters love it. Very desirable powder. But not much use for our trap style loads.

GREAT heavy field load powder for the 12 and 20. Also, blissful in the 28.

I have loaded a bunch of it in 9X19 and 40. Use HS-6 data.

There are a couple of 1 1/8 loads for AA and Blue Magic hulls in the 1981 Winchester Loading Manual. Nothing suitable for trap. Nothing under 1300 fps is shown. 540 is so slow burning that it takes nearly twice as much to make a load than Red Dot/Clays/700X etc. Like most slower burning powder is does not load down well. If you try to load it down to 1200 fps is won't burn consistently and you will get very erratic performance.

As mentioned by several above, 540 is a good 1 1/4 oz 12 gauge load and is a excellent 1 oz 20 gauge and 3/4 oz 28 gauge powder.

If you don't load any of these heavier loads, I would trade/sell it and put the money towards a more suitable powder.

540 is a dirty nasty powder from the past. Its time has come & gone. Much better choices out there now. Longshot, 20/28, etc.

The only 12ga 1 1/8 oz load I ever saw for WW540 was 33 grains in an RXP tube, using the Winchester W209 primer and the Remington 29930 RXP wad at 8500 Lups. Velocity was stated at 1255, but felt and sounded like 1500. My notes were VERY descriptive of the "blast". I double checked the data and it is listed in the Winchester Ball Powder Loading books from 1973 and 1975. I loaded a few boxes of them back in the mid-seventies. Haven't needed to try it since. It should be OK for 1 1/4 or 1 3/8 oz loads in 12ga. It's a better powder for the smaller guages like the 20 and 28s. It will work for some 16ga target loads as well. WW540 is equivalent to Hodgdon HS-6 and the WW571 powder is the discontinued HS-7. Great powders for certain applications.
