A co-worker has an ammo box with 500 rounds of 5.56x45 ammo with the 1st ? 3/8 inch of the tip bright green color. The brass has several markings, But only LC for letters I can read. The ammo box has some yellow markings but they are worn beyond recognition.

This came in a package deal he got on a Ruger SR-556. Can anyone tell me anything about this ammo. Mainly is it OK to use in the Ruger? Thanks,Richard

Lake City(LC) NATO green tip. Should have the NATO cross on the case as well as the year mfg. date.

The NATO Cross LC and the year mfg.......

Do a google on green tip 223 and you will find the answers you seek, military surplus ammo. Lifted from AR15.com- "M855 "green tip" ammo is considered "standard" or "ball" ammo by the military. It features a mild-steel penetrator in the tip to increase hard target penetration at longer ranges vs. M193, but is NOT considered AP ammo and does not perform well enough to meet that classification."

A lot of public ranges will not let you shoot the green tips.

Green tip bullet is 62 grains, has a 16 grain steel penatrator tip on top copper alloy core. It is a standard issue round for the military.HMB

In my neck of the woods, that is the preferred ammo and people pay a premium for it.
