Seems to be .410 day today, so I'll add to the fray.

I know this has been covered in other threads, but here goes:

I just got a set of Briley .410 Companion Tubes off eBay.

For reloading the little .410, I plan to use Winchester AA HS hulls, Winchester W209 Primers, 1/2 ounces of 9 shot, and I'm struggling with the powder and wad.

A friend of mine who shoots .410 quite regularly tells me he has had good success with 13.5 grains of Hodgdon Lil' Gun and a Remington SP410 wad.

I have read where folks on this forum suggest Hodgdon H110 is the "ONLY" powder to use, while others have said Winchester 296 is the "ONLY" powder to use.

Some suggest the WAAHS wad, while others the Remington wad, while still others the Orange PC wad.

Any reason why I shouldn't go with my friend's recommendation?

Any of those wads will work in the AA HS 410's. The little gun load works but I shoot 296. H110 and 296 are the same powder if you check the hogdon web site. I have get patterns with the 296 but thats just my gun. I would use which ever of the two is most available. If both are around go with the cheaper of the two. Either way the lil 410 make it tough to shoot good scores

I have always used 296 but there are other good powders available. For skeet you will probably want to load in the 1250 fps range to get factory equivalent loads.

I load with military surplus powder, WC820. It is pretty much
equivilant to H110. After many hundreds & hundreds of rounds
through a chronograph, with various combinations of wads, etc.,
I settled on Yellow Dusters for the first 5 or 6 reloads of an
HS hull, then switch for SP410's for the remaining hull life.
I have some of these HS hulls that have been reloaded 13 times
using that combination, and they still hold excellent velocities
& SD's. One can use SP410's for the whole life, but they are
quite a bit more expensive than the Yellow Dusters. I haven't
tried any of the Winchester HS wads for .410's, I grate at the
thought of anybody telling me I have to use their wads to load
their shells. Just don't like it.....
The WC820 powder is available from Jeff Bartlett at www.gibrass.com.
Saves one a lot of money over buying H110 or 296, and is as good
as they come. A number of other folks here on TS.COM use the
    same powder.
