NOPE YOU HAVE A ISSUE --SHOULD STAY OPEN ON LAST SHOT - SINGLE OR DOUBLE

We have some truly confused people here. His bolt should stay open after
firing a single shot without a shell in the magazine.

His gun is broken, broken, broken.

It is actually quite common for the tang to break of of the bolt, however the issue could be in the trigger also

Get a Remington 1100, their bolts don't break. HMB

If that's what causing it, the piece is called the locking block. ($50 from
Coles.) However, it may be something preventing the locking block from swinging open and engaging the notch in the barrel.

    I would not trade 1 390 for 3 1100 and I have had both.

Yeah, but the parts are cheap and they take 3 minutes to replace.

When was the last time you cleaned the gun?

391's need to be cleaned at least once a year - if you shoot a lot.

I have a 390 & when mine broke a locking block, the bolt would not come all the way back when shooting singles or doubles. If you know someone with a 390, try swapping out the trigger group & see if there is any difference. Could be that latch release [part# 34 on my list] is not engaging the carrier [part# 97] & the carrier lever [part# 98] so the bolt does not stay in the open position when the last round is fired.
