I been loading wad cutters without any gas check added. Is it necessary to add a gas check for a slow target load like 3 gr. Win 231 ?

Are you loading solid base, double-ended, or hollow base wad cutters? A gas check is not needed or desirable in any wad cutter at target velocities such as that generated by 3.0 gr. of 231.

Gas checks are not needed for wadcutters at normal target velocity.

If you want to amp up the velocity to the point where they start leading the bore, switch to a gas check semi-wadcutter.

I have shot thousands of 148gr. hollow base wadcutters in comp. over the years. My best load was 2.7gr. Bullseye. In a Ransom Rest, you can tear the center out of a target at 25-50 yards.

I've never seen a wadcutter that would even accept a gascheck?

me neither. a DEWC might need the 3.1 gr bullseye for best accuracy. the old 2.7 gr BE with the 148 HBWC as stated is the gold standard in the .38

3.0 W231 would be good too...
