What's the opinion on the Cheddite, primer? They are a lot cheaper than the Win. I've been useing. Are they flat like Win. or rounded like the Fed.? Any problems? thanks Butch H
Back in the dark ages, before I discovered trap, I became a life member of the NSSA. So I still get the Skeet Review each month. A year or so ago they had an article on the Nobel Sport 209 primer. It stated you could use the NS 209 in any recipe calling for the Winchester 209 and get the same results. It went on further to say that Winchester shells manufactured and sold in Europe used the NS 209 rather than the American version.
Since reading this I have used the Nobel Sport 209 in anything calling for the WIN 209. Saves a little money and I see no difference.
1) When my KX-5 got its first servicing at Ottsville, the gunsmith didn't replace the firing pin, said it was like new, so he was leaving well enough alone. Then he warned me about Cheddites being easily pierced by the firing pin. I replied that was strange, because that gun had fired at least 20,000 of 'em.
2) When the price of Chedites went up a couple of years ago, I tried Rios and switched. Same thing, at least 20,000 fired without a problem. (BTW, my K-80 also doesn't pierce either Cheddites or Rios.)
3) If I didn't know a couple of fellows who have had problems with piercing, I'd be tempted to think the problem was reloading practices. Maybe primers standing proud, or as Quack Shot says, unwise substitutions in the absense of valid data resulting in overpressure loads. But I think it's unlikely that such could account for ALL the reports of primer piercing. So I dunno.
