Actually, Zardoz, only a one day break between the Southern and the State Shoot. After a one day break, they always have a preliminary to the preliminary shoot for one day. Last year, IIRC, we shot singles, caps and doubles and, again IIRC, the year before we had a doubles marathon.

Always something on the day before and always well attended. No trophies, just for glory or bragging rights, but fun anyway.

Hi Eric, Thanks for the "heads up for 2012"!

Is Jacksonville not doing the Chain this year?

Glad to see CCC is back in the Chain!

    Joe,
No, Jacksonville is not in the chain this year. Not enough people showing up to shoot. Really not worth the time and effort to put one on and just break even or worse..

Hi Van, Thanks for the reply. I shot there a couple of years ago and it was a rainy weekend which probably kept attendance down.Being so far north in the State, temperature wise, it needs to be shooting late in the Chain.

Too bad, it was a nice looking facility.

    Just so you know..

The Florida chain shoots were a big discussion and often a heated one with clubs doing their best to get the dates that would benefit their club the most. While I agree that the northern clubs would benefit from later date the main reason that both Jacksonville and Gainsville were early was in an attempt to make it easier for the travelers to hit as many of the clubs on the chain as possible. An attempt was made to make it a gentle swing threw the state without being north one week, south the next then back north again. Also to make the last of the chain end near the Silver Dollar for the Southern and State shoots.

Since the ATA took away the mileage protection that was offered the clubs holding chain shoots.. things have slowly went down in attendance forcing many of the old club that were on the chain to drop the event.

Hope to see many of my friends this winter when they come down.. and make more new ones as well. Travel safe .. and enjoy your visit.

    635G,

Flagler will absolutely be hosting the chain Feb 8-12. It's the second link in the chain. Markham Park starts the chain Feb 2-5.

    FlaLargto...you said

The ATA doesn't mandate the proximity between clubs, that would be the State Association.

Yes.. The Florida Trap Association had mileage requirements and each chain shoot was protected. Nice idea but a couple of clubs complained to the ATA and it went away. Not having these protections has significantly affected The Chain Shoots.

The Silver dollar has effected the Chain shoots. People go the the Dollar and never leave it to go to any other club because of all the shoots the Dollar holds.

Shooting the chain has always been a challange and with the special purses being added for the 2012 chain it should bring out more shooters than ever. The chain shoot at Markham has always brought out many vendors that helps to attract more shooters.

Once we get vendor confirmations I'll post them along with other details about the program, fees & special purses. As usual Markham will have the Sunday "Special Event", always fun for those who like to wager a farthing or two.

TBaber - are you saying the ATA changed their proximity rule? See Section III A. in the current Rulebook. The question of close proximity is left to the judgement of the officials of the State association. If they can't decide, it is up to the ATA Delegate.

That wording hasn't changed for many, many years...so it looks as though it is a State association issue...not an ATA issue.

Running Bear that is not exactly true. I and several others have traveled to various chain shoots. The demise or low numbers at a couple are their own doing so don't blame the dollar or the shooters.
