There are two basic approaches to awarding handicap trophies, place and yardage groups. The place method (awarding trophies to the top scores independent of yardage)is based on the assumption that the handicap system is somewhat fair for everyone and the top 5 or 10 scores should be rewarded. Using yardage groups assures that the trophies will be distributed among short, mid and long yardage shooters. With this system, a 96 might win one yardage group but a 97 could be left out in another yardage group. There are both clear advantages and disadvantages to both systems. Management must select one that is believed to be best for their shooters. Awarding trophies by yardage group is analogous to awarding trophies by classes.

Awarding handicap trophies by place became popular about 8 years ago. During the last 3-4 years, the yardage group method has again become the most popular.

Gotta have yardage trophies, and a yardage purse/option. Having both of those, IMO, will do more to keep new shooters in the game than some of the handicap changes that have been purposed here lately.

Isn't the purpose of Handicap Groups to Group Competitors of different skill levels for award purposes? Of course it is as with Classes in Singles & Doubles.

Pour more concrete so the 27 yard shooter will reach a point in yardage where he also struggles and his scores drop. Until this is done you can't level the playing field.

Maybe someone should add right handed and left handed groups. Makes as much sense as yardage group trophies.

My late trap shooting buddy liked to tell the story about his friend in Wyoming that was always hoping they'd have a category callled "High Jew".
