Probably 17 or 18 grains.......BUT read Alliant Powder's Catalog or review their loads on-line! Read first, load and CHECK your powder drops!

The Alliant website says 19 grains.

    Bill,

I am always willing to step up and help whenever I can but I think the smart play is to get on Alliantpowder.com website and get the info straight from them. They have just what you are looking for and you are getting from the front end of the horse.

    Regards, John

You have to consider that Bill lives up yonder in that region where they have 14.4 dial up only AND it's a party line....

I use 21 grains with same load and it is fast ( about 1280) I dont get any recoil. I have used 18.5 and it is softer but too slow for me

    Cuban:

You load 21 grains of Red Dot using the components listed by Mr. Grill?

According to Alliant 19 grains of Red Dot produces 10,100 psi of chamber pressure. 19 grains is also the max powder charge I could find on line and several Alliant manuals.

Where would a curious person find published data for your 21 grain suggestion? I'm curious what kind of chamber pressure 21 grains of Red Dot generates.

Cubancigar2000, are you pulling our legs? 21 grains of Red Dot and no recoil? Are you using any shot or is this a July 4th noise maker loaded with wads only?

21 grains of Red Dot in a modern plastic hull with a plastic wad is IMO way too much Red Dot. Are your primers still seated flush in the hull?

21 grains of Red Dot reminds me of the old paper hull, felt wad and nitro over powder card days.

Way back in the 1960's, when AA's first came out and I was using a Lee loader, I put too much Red Dot (19 grains I think) in some AA hulls with the WWAA12 Wad, W209 primer and 1 1/8 oz of shot and ejected primers back into the action of an 1100.

I am sure that you know this but If you need to push 1 1/8 oz of shot at 1200 fps and beyond, that is where Green Dot and Unique really perform well.

Back in the paper hull days, we used 23 gr Red Dot with card/fiber wads and 1 1/8 oz shot.

Plastic shells and wads took it down to 18 gr.

When I want 1250 with 1 1/8 oz, there is always Unique.
