I'm going to buy some new 1oz loads at the Grand to use on singles and 1st shot at doubles. I've not shot a factory load like this in years as I reload my own but I've decided on new shells this time. Which brand(s) are the softest shooting? I want a shell that is in the 1180-1200fps area and see several of the brands show them in their lineups. I'm not concerned with hull quality as I will most likely be letting them all hit the ground.

I see more "Estates" by Federal in the trash than any other; they must be popular for some reason.

I have used both Winchester and Federal cheapies @ 1180 ft/sec and I can't tell any difference in recoil. They do the job for their purpose.

    I've been getting 1 oz 2 3/4 dram Estates.

    1180 fps.

Breaks back to the 23 for me.

    I just drop them.

    <i>"Which brand(s) are the softest shooting?"</i>

The ones that have the lowest muzzle velocity.

I agree, but that's not how I've found things to be in every case. I have some Rio 2-3/4dr 1-1/8s that kick as hard and seem as fast as most 3dr shells I use for 'caps. Estate 2-3/4dr loads seem much softer, about like one would expect a light load to feel.

What you're feeling is probably real. Not all 2-3/4 dram shells go 1145 fps, just as not all 3 dram loads go 1200 fps. SAAMI has a +/- 90 fps allowable variation from the stated muzzle velocity (for a given lot, not shell-to-shell.)

Neil Winston did some testing of factory loads some time back, which showed quite a bit of variation from stated muzzle velocity among the various manufacturers factory loads.

I like the Rio 1oz load the best the recoil is not a sharp as some of the others,it is a little faster (1210fps) than the others though so I wouldn't say the recoil is less,If recoil is a concern Rio makes a 7/8 oz 1200fps load that works great for your application and is very soft shooting.Jerry

Thanks folks, I guess I'll see what brands I can buy when I get to Sparta. A few practice rounds with the various loads will tell me what I want to know!

Remington Gun Clubs, Estates, or Winchester Supertargets. They're all the same.

The STS's are ll85 fps. The Winchesters should be abit faster at 1200 fps. But don't quote me on that. Get the rebate and shoot the good one's. Break=em all. JEff

If you want soft shooting loads use Federal paper 2-3/4 X 1-OZ 8-1/2 shot.
Used these at the last Grand I attended on 16's and never broke below a 97, the targets I missed were my fault. You can't beat this load.

Went to the Grand this morning, got classified and bought some AA 1oz. With the rebates I figured it was about even cost wise between these and the "cheap" shells. I'll try a few boxes and if they aren't what I'm after I'll try the others.

I like the Remington STS 1185pfs 8.5s for first shot of doubles.

Plus you get great hulls for reloading!
