The price of shot keeps going up and I'm thinking about working up a 12 Ga. 7/8 ounce load - suggestions for powder choice and wad in "old" style Winchester hulls or Remington STS hulls ?

    thanks in advance

I use Red Dot or Clays.

7/8 oz load is the reason I reload. Can't find too many selections on 7/8 oz.

Rex 0 is cheapest and works great. Some say it's dirty but load it to the faster speeds and it's fine.

I have always liked Clays powder (16.8 grs) and the Winchester WAA12SL (pink) wad for 7/8 ounce. The Clays powder takes up a lot of room so that is why the WAA12SL wad works for 7/8 ounce. This load will work in either the old compression formed AA or the HS case.

You will want one of the faster burning powders, the short list should include CLAYS, Red Dot, 700X. Promo will work and it is economical but is pretty dirty for what ever that might mean to you.

In case you haven't guessed, I like CLAYS.

I have found 17G of either Promo (Pratice) or TiteWad in either Rem. (STS or Gold Metal), or Win. AA, ClayBuster 078-12, with Win. or Fio primer, gives me right at 1200 FPS, and smokes targets from the 16, first of doubles (works ok for second too), with #8 1/2 shot. That is about as "cheep" as you will probly be able to load.

16.4 grains of 700X, winchester grey or claybuster clone. 7/8 ounce 8 1/2 shot in a compression formed case. It works for skeet, 16's and first shot of doubles. No kickee at all in my 1110 either, but it cycles every time!

Used 700X for years, but I like to use the same powder for 12 gauge and pistol loads. For some reason, my Dillon measures don't do well with 700X, and then it was no longer available 'relatively' inexpensively, so I switched to Clays, which works through everything just fine. I can't tell the difference except that Clays burns cleaner. I use a B&P T2 wad in both of the hulls you use.

I load AA hulls with 16.8gr of Clays, 7/8oz shot, Win 209 primers, Claybuster wads (CB 4100 12B). It is an awesome load that works well for trap as well as skeet. Very low recoil. Very clean burning.
    Good luck! Bob

I agree EE. Promo doesn't like to be slowed down below 1250fps when using 7/8 loads. It doesn't have enough pressure for a consistant burn.

I use 17.5 grains of red dot, winchester gray wads or claybuster equivalent, chedite or winchester primers and sts , gun club or aa hulls. i switched to chedite primers lately only because i could not get other brands. in normal temperatures 40 degrees and above i get 1300 fps in my ljutic and about 1200 in my perazzi, perazzi is ported and 30" barrels. for practice i really don't care which hull i use. for matches i use only once fired sts. i chronograph all my loads, the guides are not gun specific.

I have not found signifcant speed variations with different hulls, what i have found is that in 20 degree weather my loads are slower. i tend to leave 2-400 rounds in the car so the ammo is really cold. this may also cause the wad to contract some. I have used as much as 19.5 grains of red dot with out signs of excess pressure. If you done have a chronograph it's a great 100$ investment doc

I made some with Bullseye once, and they worked great. If I was a pistol shooter I could have it for double duty.

Everyone laughs at it but IMR PB is the softest shooting powder in 7/8 ounce i have ever seen. I use the 24 gram load data. It makes a really sweet load.
