I was wondering how far back would you shoot a 1 oz. of # 8 at 1210 fps.

    Thanks, Jeff

Above 60 degrees, 1oz #8 around 1230 fps will break anything. At 27yd, I normally shoot a 1240fps load. It's what I feel comfortable with.

The first time a fellow shooter talked me into shooting tagets at the 27 yard line in pratice the only load I had at the time was some 1 oz. # 7and1/2's with me. I broke-em all. Chipped a few but all broke. So I can tell you they work just fine at 27 yards.Break-em all. Jeff

I have made it back to the 25 with 1 ounce, 2 3/4 dram 8s.

    I think I like 1 1/8 3 dram 7 1/2s a little better from there back..........

I shoot them from the 24...I just tighten the choke a bit more.

I went to the 25 with 1oz loads but had to go with 1-1/8 oz Nitro 27's to get to the 27. I go back and forth in the yardage but stay with the Nitro's for HC.

My best all time HC score was a 98 at the 23 with 1oz loads that got me a 2-yard punch at the California State Shoot a few years ago but I've had a half a dozen or so 97's at the 25 and 26.

I've shot three 100 straights (Singles) with 1oz loads and a bunch of 99's.

I think you need to shoot what you are physically and mentally comfortable with.

I have used 1 oz 8 AA's to win turkey shoots at 40 yards.....and would shoot them excusively for all events if I could get them all the time in Alberta.

Remington makes those Nitro 1 oz. Handicap shells for those shooters who can't hit 'em with an 1 1/8 oz.

    Oh, now, Neil....

1 oz is fine at 16 yards. There are a LOT of number 8-1/2 pellets in an ounce.

I HAVE been convinced that 1-1/8 ounce of 7-1/2's is a good idea for handicap, and that is what I now use.

If you are convinced of this for handicap,,,,,,,it must be good for 16yd. I hope you take those 1oz loads with you to a shoot off with me.

If at International trap they can break a smaller and thicker target that is flying faster and farther while being thrown at varying elevations and wider angles with a 7/8oz load of shot anyone should be able break them at the 27yd line with 1oz load of shot.

I use my 1oz loads from the 16 all the way back to the 27+.

If I do my part they break targets

Neil ... just what does the 2nd shot have to do with anything at all? You dont take a 2nd shot unless you miss on the 1st shot and by then the bird is even farther away and even more difficult to hit. Far more difficult than shooting the 27yd line.

BTW ... if you do your part the target will break.
