Summer modified Frogg Toggs?

I use Frogg Toggs for shooting in the rain. I wear a vest so they are no problem with gun mount. The Toggs I have are the model with the full length front zipper and snaps, and the hood that folds into the collar.

To keep that collar out of the way of the gun mount I have to keep it snapped pretty much to the top. Even though I'm a light sweater, it can be a bit clammy in warm weather.

But I also carry a trash bag with pre-cut head and arm holes in my bag for unexpected or pop-up storms. I got caught in one of those recently and was glad my emergency "rain-gear" was handy.

While wearing it I noticed the trash-bag was less clammy than the Frogg Toggs. That surprised me, but when I thought about it I realized it was because the trash-bag rain-gear was more open at the throat and, probably more importantly, it is sleeveless. The clammy feeling on bare arms with the Frogg Toggs seems the most annoying. Yeah, my arms get wet with the trash-bag, but that is no problem in warm weather and short sleeves.

I've found a dealer that is having a close-out sale on Frogg Toggs. $19 for a version with a non-folding hood. For $19 I'm thinking of getting them, then cutting off the hood and the sleeves for my summer rain-gear.

Waddaya think?

I received a pm from one of the more prominent shooters at this site telling me there are better prices than from the dealer I had intended to use. So that sent me on an internet comparison shopping expedition. It's not all that simple to compare prices without filing out the order form in order to factor in the shipping and other charges, then only to discover my size and color wasn't always available, and that better prices in the catalog didn't always means the best deal after shipping and other charges were factored in. Most came to about the same price shipped.

But I stumbled on the Frogg Toggs on-line store and they have a great price and free shipping.

I found some interesting things about Frogg Toggs. Other than their high-end lines, they are essentially made of Tyvek. My current suit has three layers, the style on sale (Dri Ducks) has only two.

I also found a couple of reviews at online backpacking sites. They generally gave a good review. They stopped the rain (important), were very light and easily compacted for storage; all very important to backpackers, and for my use as well. A rain jacket in my shell bag is a whole lot better for me than one in the truck or car, or worse yet, at home. The backpackers thought they were durable enough for backpacking so I guess they'll survive on the trap and skeet fields. They might not be the best choice if you are planning on following your Beagles through the bunny brambles and thickets.

But I discovered some other information that might explain the really good prices on these items (Dri Ducks). It turns out Dri Ducks was a competing brand that has been purchased by Frogg Toggs or the the company that owns Frogg Toggs. It is not unusual after an acquisition that the old inventory is cleaned out real fast. Think back a few years to when Federal Cartridge was sold and the great prices on Federal ammo then.

Shouldda ordered one of their rain caps while I was at it. Come to think of it, I should have bought more of that $35/flat 410 and 28 gauge ammo Federal was selling.

Received my DriDucks FroggToggs. They aren't the quality of high-end Gore-Tex, but I paid one-tenth of the price. They are certainly head and shoulders above any of the other cheap stuff. For sure they are a perfect base for the modifications I have in mind. And they came, and will fit, in a carry pouch that will easily fit in my ammo bag.

I did go internet shopping and got them at a place that promised free shipping. I had problems with them, but FroggToggs Inc. intervened and got me what I ordered. If I did it again I'd order from Dick's and pay the freight. The few dollars saved in shipping wasn't worth the hassles.

If I get to use them in warm to hot weather I'll let you know how they work.
