new to reloading need advice

I know this topic has been discussed at length, but I could use advice from some experienced reloaders. I just shot my first reloaded shells, I got some advice and used 18.3grns of promo with a downrange windjammer wad(orange). 1 1/8 ounce of 7 1/2 shot. They demolished the targets from 27 yard line, plenty of recoil, and very dirty. I wouldn't mind the extra powder residue, but I shoot a 391 auto. I would like the same results out of another cleaner recipe. I would like to keep it 1200fps plus, 1235 would be good for 27 yrd line. I would also like to keep 1 1/8 ounce if possible. If anyone recommends 1 ounce from 27 yards i would consider trying it if necessary for speed. Thought about E-3 but didn't know if it would be good for 1 1/8 ounce. Also thought about green dot, but heard it was a little dirty. Any advice would be much appriciated before i go shopin. Thanks in advance.

You didn't say what hull you were using (it matters), but regardless, e3 is not a real good handicap powder. Green Dot is the world default for caps - and for a reason.

GD won't be as dirty as Promo, but that's like saying a wet Lab smells better than a wet GSP.

Embrace your gun-cleaning side.

If your dog is like mine, he doesn't mind stinking (in fact prefers it), nor water, especially - it's the soap that bothers him.

You have several good choices for 1250hp CAPS powders from Alliant, including Universal & Herco, in addition to GD.

Wads? Windjammer, Versalite, Fig-8 ...

Primers? any medium-strength is fine: Win/Fio/NS/Ched/Rem/CCI T&S ... those three powders light just fine.

If you want to try some VERY.SALTY 1oz loads (on the cheap), drop a used primer or a pinto bean in your 1-1/8oz wad with the same 22-22½gn of GD, and sluice an ounce of hard #8 on top.

It crimps fine, and adds a new dimension to the 7½ or 8 debate.

There's a place for 1-1/8 of 1250 7½ (lots of wind & bouncy birds), but that 3¼dr x 1oz is mighty special, particularly if you break your birds between 40 & 45 yards.
