Will be visiting kids in Austin over Christmas and wondering what the Texas laws are regarding an out-of-stater buying a shotgun.

Thanks

Well, for what it's worth, I was born and raised in TX but I have recently moved to LA. From what I know, I am only allowed to purchase long guns from the connecting states of TX. Because I am still considered a resident of TX, I cannot purchase handguns. I do not know where you are visiting from but I'm sure you will be just fine as long as you are not purchasing handguns... Hope this helps a bit...

I don't think an out of state resident in any state can legally buy a gun in another state without having it sent back to their home state for all the paperwork. Private treaty sales, legally are the same, but that would be the only way you could buy one in another state and take it home in your possession.

I'm not sure about travel restrictions but I think it is only with adjoining states. I live in Georgia and have purchased long guns in Alabama, Florida and South Carolina with no problem. I looked at one in Dick's while visiting in Knoxville Tn and the clerk told me I wasn't allowed to purchase it and take it with me but could have it sent to my FFL. It didn't make sense to me but didn't argue. I'm also not sure if the travel restrictions I mentioned above still apply. While in the Air Force I had to get the guns put on my orders if taking them across more than one state line. Jackie B.

I too have purchased long guns in Texas. We have a place on Toledo Bend and I live during the nice months in Illinois (NOT CHICAGO). As compared to Illinois, the whole process was very easy. You find the gun you like, fill out the 4473 paper work, then leave the store with the gun the same day. Whole process may take 30 minutes once you find what you like and settle on a price.

Info below is straight from the GCA........My take may be wrong, but it seems to say you can buy a gun, but you have to take possession from a licensed dealer in your home state.

B3) May an unlicensed person
obtain a firearm from an out-of-
State source if the person arranges
to obtain the firearm through a
licensed dealer in the purchaser’s
own State?
A person not licensed under the
GCA and not prohibited from acquiring
firearms may purchase a firearm
from an out-of-State source and obtain
the firearm if an arrangement is
made with a licensed dealer in the
purchaser's State of residence for the
purchaser to obtain the firearm from
the dealer.
