This may be a stupid question, but how may 20ga shells 78o/z #8 shot can I expect out of a 25#bag of shot.

thanks

there is a reloading calculator on the home page of this site......you can put all kinds of different numbers in to compare cost...check it out.

Not to be unkind, but am I the only one who thinks that people who need to ask rudimentary arithmetic questions like this, much less think that only a "logtime reloder" can answer them, have no business in the world reloading ammunition?

This is PRECISELY why almost every shotgun that ever blows up happens to do so while shooting reloads.

the guy just asked a simple question........not every body uses math every day, and some go through life not needing to know how many 7/8 oz loads you get out of a 25 lb. bag of shot,...when some one askes a question like that it takes less effort to give them a way to look it up than it does to tell them they have no business reloading.

GW22,

No I'm sorry I'm not a math scholar,I was GM master tech for 26yrs before I became disabled and stared refurbishing MEC loaders as a 2nd income! But the thing I was trying to find out was does it make any difference on what size shot as to how many shells you put out. A frend was going to load some shells for me for a loader and I was trying to get a est on how much componants to send him.

thanks

Lee, pay them no mind guy! Some guys get their kicks or rocks off informing others of their own intelligence, brilliance, book smarts or just showing their azz, not sure myself which sometimes. Most here are a tremendous asset to our shooting sports though and very helpful to all. Some are just a PITA.

Bob, put a light load of 296 in a 44 mag and see what happens. Use about half of a full charge.

Have a video camera on site. Or you could try the same with a large capacity case rifle round.

Oh, yes, be sure your health insurance is paid up.

Go to the above site, and read Load Density paragraph 2.

This is What the detonation buzz is all about.

halfmile I thank you for the information and the website. I do however find it hard to see a relation as often as is being claimed when I never see anything written about a relation to Shotshell loading data.

I have read the warnings many times in Rifle data but have yet to see it in Shotshell data. Yet every time a Shotgun has an incident hmb cries wolf the sky is falling.

Maybe it happens a lot yet the Shotshell reloading data in the manuals I have read through never warn about it. I just want to read something that directly say that there is a danger of a detonation danger in Shotshell loads.

halfmile,

I personally don't use charge bars with bushings, I use a universal charge bar with a powder baffle to get a more constant charge and weigh the first 10 drops and every 20th after to be safe. This not my first rodeo, anybody that has bought one of my loaders will tell you the work I take and do on these loaders and that is the way with everything I do!!

thanks

Lee:

As I said, I really wasn't trying to be unkind. It's just that reloading must begin and end with Safety, Safety, Safety. Everyone on the line is betting their life -- literally -- that those shooting reloads knew exactly what they were doing and stayed alert during the process.

I apologize for offending you.

Please be careful.

GW22- You stated that you are not a "math scholar" and that OK. Several scholars responded to your question. A few responded well with the comments that most bushings throw light charges and the best reloaders spill a little shot around the reloading machine. This indicates more wisdom than some other responses that provided an absolute number. In a later post, you introduced another parameter to your question. That was the size of the shot. That gets into the packing theory, something I find interesting.

A few posters indicated that some math knowledge is required to be a safe and reliable reloader. They were critical of GE22 for am apparent lack of this knowledge. I hope these scholars who criticized GE22 will now answer his second question using the edge effect of the packing theory and shot size. If they can't do that, by the criteria they stated, they may not be safe reloaders.

I think birddog1964's procedure of weighing drops, powder and shot, from a universal charge bar is the 'exact' way to reload. The difference in a 1 1/8 drop of Remington 7.5 vs 8.5 shot size is 6 to 8 marks on my universal charge bar, depending on the batch of shot.

Technically, if exact drop weights are desired, an adjustable charge bar is needed to do that.

Regarding detonation , there are several necessary factors present in metallic cartridges, that are not present in a modern 12 ga shell. I don't believe anyone or any lab has ever succeeded in creating detonation in a modern shotshell with a plastic hull and wad. The necessary factors involved to create detonation in a shotshell do not exist.
