Question on Primer Shape

I currently reload with an old PW 800C that I bought from my grandfather about a year ago. It works great, but the primer feed (the part with the spring the holds the primer as in enters the pocket) has a little bit of play in it. This is a problem when loading Fiocchi primers. The fiocchi primers are shaped more like a cylinder in the there is no subtle taper or rounding at the top of the primer. So if the primer feed is not lined up exactly with the hull due to slop in the mechanism, it will deform the brass base of the hull and effectively destroy it. To make sure this doesnt happen, I have to gently push on the primer feed every time I push the handle back up and this slows my loading. This isn't an issue if the primers have a rounded off edge which helps to guide it into the pocket.

My question is: which of the budget primers (Noble Sport, Cheddite, Wolf, Rio) have a rounded or tapered top edge. I am about to buy a case and would like to know this in advance.

I am loading Cheddite 800-B and have no problems so far. The Cheddite has a taper but not as pronouced as a Winchester, Remington or Federal.

Cheddites are shaped similarly to the Remingtons and have a rounded shoulder. The Rio has a very sharp shoulder and are oversized. The Fioochi has a sharp shoulder as well. Haven't bothered with the Wolf primers, so I can't say much about them. If I remember correctly, Nobel Sports were very slightly rounded, but oversized. I'm a hundred miles from my loading bench and can't give you decent pictures for a few days.

I load the fio's on an 800+ and have never enountered the problem you are having. I've loaded about 30,000 in the last 3 years. I suspect there may be an adjustment or wear issue with the loader if you are having that much trouble. IOW, you may still have the problem if you change primers.

I second Rick Barker's remarks - in fact I'll say that the european primers tend to be more squared off at the top than our trio of makers. I haven't tried them all but have had considerable experience with Cheddites and Winchesters.......breakemall.....Bob Dodd
