I usually load only as the load book states and try to be as safe as possible. On my search for the perfect load I started by using a STS Hull, Win 209 Primer, 19 grains of American Select and a Downrange XL 118 wad. The load shot good, but it was a little on the hot side and produced velocities around 1230 fps.
I reduced the load to 18.0 grains and found that the load shot OK , but I had a dish in the top of the shell. After speaking to another shooter at the range he suggested using a 1 oz. wad. The other shooter had been substituting the 1 oz. fig 8 wad for the 1 1/8 wad for several years and had very good results.
I had some samples of the 1 oz. XL wads at home, so I tried a few. They shoot good and the funny thing was that I had to increase my wad pressure slightly, but the velocity went down from the other shells.
Any reason I shouldn't switch wads and use the 1 oz. wad.
I use 1oz. wads for 1 1/8oz.loads with Tightgroup powder all the time. Since the volume of that powder is so low using 1oz. wads provides for the perfect crimp.
The 99 of the first 100 targets I shot Sunday didn't know anything about fliers as they were crushed. Please don't ask me what I broke on the next 25!!
Had the same problem with Federal gold medal clays 18.4 Fedeal 209A and 1 1/8 will not crimp right used I oz wad works great shot 5000 this way my question is what does the factory use to load the gold medals ?? why can,t we duplicate this load
Genuine Remington FIG-8 (white and intended for 1-1/8 loads) and TGT-12 (green and intended for one-ounce loads) wads have the same size shotcup. Aside from color, their only difference is that the "8" in the cushion section is compressed slightly on the FIG-8, making it a little shorter.
TURNKEY321 On my bag of genuine Remington TGT12S wads it says 1oz.and 11/8oz. wad,so I would say it makes no differance. It also says to duplicate factory Nitro27 11/8,1oz.loads STS 1oz loads. I wonder if I'm the only one that reads that stuff.Hmmmmmm. I hope this helps George.
The other shooter had been substituting the 1 oz. fig 8 wad for the 1 1/8 wad for several years and had very good results.I guess the question is what wad should I switch too? It is funny that he had to put more wad pressure on as I thought you just had to seat the wad on the powder.Velocity went down? Methinks someting is not quite right. George
I did just the opposite when I changed to 1 oz loads from 1 1/8 , I used up all the old wads without having any cupped or depressed finished shells . It seemed to have less felt recoil with them . No pellets were rattling in the shells either .
I used some DownRange XL-1s in a Fiocchi hull with an 1 1/8 load and they shot just great. Take the time to call Kevin as he will tell you the straight story. He does have the equipment to test and does it for individuals for a really small fee if you're interested in pressures and velocity.
I'd call Kevin Lewis at Downrange AND check with Alliant Powder. The load shouldn't be that high in pressure, that a change in the wad would be that eventful, but you never know unless you have the means to pressure test them. The TGT12 is used in many 1 1/8 oz loads with dense powders.
Upon further looking, I found that the load I am using is listed in the Alliant Reloading Manual using a Federal Gold Medal Hull.
