Gunsmith at Montana State Shoot

Anybody know if there'll be a gunsmith at the Montana State Shoot at Missoula this July, and who it will be-----and if he'd be qualified to work on the triggers of my new Beretta 687?

Was planning on calling Jerry White of Ft Collins, CO (recommended here awhile ago) about it but haven't got around to it yet, maybe he'll be at the State Shoot here?

Any other suggestions for a 'smith somewhere reasonably close to eastern Montana? Would Pat Laib of Minnesota be a good one to work on my Beretta?

Prob'ly a lot of disorganized questions here, feel free to answer any or all of them?

John, in my opinion you would be far better off sending your gun right now to a recommended gunsmith like Jerrie White or Pat Laib instead of gambling on whoever they can scrounge up to come to Missoula. Getting a quality traveling gunsmith is a difficult task.

Mike, which of the two gentlemen you mentioned would you recommend? I'm kind'a planning to take it in the airplane and fly over/down to whomever. Ft Collins, Co & Spicer, Mn are about the same distance from here.

I think you might have a point about the 'smith who shows up at the State Shoot? Altho' I posed the question to Roger Roness over here in Glasgow and he recommended a guy from Arizona who works on his triggers, same guy who was at Billings at the State Shoot a couple years ago I think? My understanding is he's not coming to Missoula tho'?

Funny thing is; even with triggers as gritty as a Daisy BB gun I'm shooting the Beretta pretty well?? Hate to send it off this time of year and go without it for a month or so. OTOH, the main desire is to get a >good< trigger job.

John, I had Jerrie White build an excellent Double Release for me and I also had Pat Laib repair my Ruger 77 and do some choke tube tuning for me so I have confidence in both of those guys. Pat does not do Release triggers but that is no concern for you. The 'smith' they had at a Montana State Shoot a few years ago has a shall we say less than sparkling reputation. I'm going to the Hoppie Shoot so I will ask who is coming to the State Shoot.

Thank's guys and any other suggestions welcome!

Wayne, tell me more about this Randy Stenson in Great Falls. Is he a full time professional gunsmith with a shop somewhere in Great Falls? And does he specialize in anything in particular or do general gunsmithing? Since my old gunsmith in Havre (Alan Dees) retired a few years ago I'm wandering around like a lost puppy everytime I need some gunsmith work done.

John; We met in Billings (I recognized you with your Ruger trap gun). Phil has done numerous trigger-jobs for me with excellent results. I let Phil work on my guns (personal and the ones I sell)when I can, mostly because I don't want problems down the road.....merlyn....

merlyn,

Yes I remember meeting you in Billings.

I doubt that I'll make it to the Washington State Shoot at Spokane but I'll keep that in mind. OTOH that'd be a good excuse to take off the weekend and fly over to Spokane & shoot, Hmmmmm-------ya' never know, Spokane ain't really that much farther than Missoula from eastern Montana when you think about it? I might just talk myself into it.

Thank you Rick,

I assumed since you didn't mention him in the other thread I posted here awhile ago that he'd rather not tackle it? I too respect a guy who'll tell you right up front if he'd rather not. I occasionally have some "general gunsmithing" job I need done, what kind of work does Randy specialize in? And-----is he a full time professional gunsmith with a shop there somewhere? I sure wouldn't criticize the guy if he's just a competent amature, I've been known to tinker on guns a bit myself. But I'll admit I'm a little intimidated by this. I'm sure all it needs is smoothing up the sear engagement surfaces but I'm not so sure I can get it apart and back together without winding up with a box full of loose parts?

I've got myself just about talked into Spokane the end of June. That would mean I'd miss the ATA shoot at Circle-------but the way I cleaned up in the Lewis at Circle last year I should prob'ly give somebody else a shot at it >this< year anyway?
