While Goose hunting last week my 870 Express would not release the shell in the magazine and I would close the bolt on an empty chamber. I have completely torn the gun down and cleaned it except the trigger assembly. Closely watched while I operated the gun and it seems that the piece on the left side of the action does not move in far enough to release the shell.
I had similar problems with a Rem 11-87. Check the shell latch
on the left side of the receiver and see if the tip is broken
off. The tip makes contact with the shell in the magazine tube
at this point. As you cycle the foreend rearward,it allows the
tip to release the shell from the tube..
Hope this solves your problem. The shell latch is staked to the
side of thr receiver and easily removed.
Have you tried a different BRAND of ammo?? I had the same experience, my gun did not like Winchester ammo tried Rems. & Feds. no more problem..otherwise check and clean shellstops as mentioned in above response , hope this helps.. Ross Puls
