I know I have read threads about this powder but didn't find the info I wanted. What yardage is this powder good for? What is a good load using AA hulls, claybuster wads and cheddite primers? Thanks for your assistance. Jackie B.

Its good for whatever yardage you want to use it from. 1200 fps loads with this powder work fine for me back to the 27. Charge weights do vary a little from batch to batch, but i see it as well worth the savings. I use the claybuster wt12 wads in a remington hull with a nobel sport primer. My load is 18grs.

I load and shoot lots of Promo powder. I also agree with JoeE1 and jbmOU about the charge weights varying from batch to batch (more than I'd like in all three of my MECs). I might be concerned if I was a 27-yard shooter. Even then, Green Dot would be superior probably. But for the way I shoot singles, doubles, and short yardage handicaps, what the hell, the savings is great. Just opened my twentieth keg.

Love Promo.

Unless you want/need a heavy handicap load it does the job very efficiently. Use Red Dot recipes - bushing size will vary lot to lot as stated.

I have gone through about 8 kegs. I am buying two cases (same lot #) at a time so the lot to lot variation is a very minor concern - bushings are cheap and last a life time; so I do not understand why Joe1 would rather spend another 40-50% more for powder.

I use it in AA, STS and Federal hulls with the Red Dot using recipes on the Alliant site. I have a K-80 and have not blow it up yet - LOL.

It is funny that we spend $10k+ on a gun and try to save $.25 a box on shells. Trap shooters are a weird bunch - but I am glad to be part of the insanity.

The prices were from Graf's Reloading at Mexico, Missouri as of Tuesday. I checked their website again just now. Eight pounds of Promo has jumped to $86.99 and Red Dot to $103.99.

Those prices may be misleading in that shipping is included. Most everywhere else shipping charges are xtra.

Promo is a very good powder. I load it and sell it. I load it in a Gun Club hull, 18.0 grains, XL-1 wad, and 1 ounce of shot. That gives 1200fps. I use this for first shot of doubles. It works great. As mentioned in the thread above, Alliant has had a price increase.

I still have 6 lbs of promo powder from my first jug. I tried it and ran into problem with performance in the cold. It was probably due to the components I was using. It don't have a problem in warmer weather with it. Problem is most likely due to Fio primers and 1 oz of shot and the wad I was using however that is for a different thread. The powder is now used only for sporting clay ranges and disposable hulls as I shoot an auto. It does run a bit dirty and seems to deposit on the hulls when used, but not a problem with disposable hulls. I will burn up the powder and probably not use it again. I went back to 700X and the cost difference isn't that much as you use less 700X than promo. I would like to mention that the Promo/FIO combination seems to have less recoil than 700X. Nope not looking to start this conversation again on the site, and perception is fact only from the users standpoint. FYI performance of 16.5 grains of 700X takes 18 grains of Promo.

Ditch the Fiocchi primers for cold weather. I've never had good results with them and Promo when cold. Using a decent primer gives much better results. I mostly use the Winchester W209 or the Federal 209A with Promo for cold weather.

As far as lot variations, I've had some wide variations with Red Dot as well. A few years ago one lot of Red Dot was off by two bushings. Promo has been pretty consistent over the few years it's been produced. It's usually one bushing size or less between lots. I try to buy two or more cases from one lot of Promo at a time to keep things consistent.

Promo works quite well for 1 oz and reasonable 1 1/8 oz loads. I've fired more than 1000 rounds through my 1100 without cleaning, with no malfunctions. I usually clean it at least every 500, but during some of the busy weekends, it gets neglected a bit. Cleanup is about the same as any other powder.

I load 18 grs. of pomo with a Focchi primer and a claybuster 1 1/8 wad, when I do my part it will smoke targets from 16 yds to 27 yds. I use #8s up to 23 yds and #7 1/2 shot on back. Works for me and the costs let me shoot Twice as much. $80.00 compared to $100.00 plus (powder)
$95.00 compared to $150.00 plus (primers)
