I'm trying to fix a canting problem. When mounted lower barrel is 10-15 degrees off with top of gun rolled in towards face. I have adjustable Pad and comb. Should I be moving comb to reduce cast or move pad?
I would think you may need to move both. Start off by angling the pad in order to straighten out the gun, then you may need to move comb for fit and sight picture. I'm not a gun fitter, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night
Regarding miss, i did discover i hit targets better when i aim a little left, i've concluded this is because my barrel is slightly right.
moving my pad appeared to do little for cant adjusting cast in, looks like gun set for left hand shooter (i'm right handed) does strighten but that seems odd
There is more than one cause of gun canting. One is that inadequate pitch on the stock - the toe of the stock protrudes too far. The shooter rotates - cants - the gun to put the toe in the armpit to allow more the pad to make better contact with the shoulder.
Another cause is to improve the position of the eye relative to the rib. The cause can involve a need for cast or a change in the height of the comb.
I would first rotate the pad so the gun is not canted. Next, adjust the comb (right/left) so you are looking straight down the barrel. Then mount the gun several times each day for a few days and make certain you have things right.
Then, practice mounting your gun at least ten times each day until Spring.
Another way to stop the canting (a problem for me) is a slight change in hold (left hand) on the forearm; I shoot a BT-99 (Competition style not old style) and have been able to position my left thumb on the top edge of the left side of the forearm just about 1/8th inch to the left of the barrel. I had preferred to correct this without making any changes to the recoil pad. My hold overall on the forearm has not increased pressure-wise and balance is good. Hope this helps. Darrell
Thanks to all for replies. Rollin I appreciate your book, i had a kick-eez modified trap pad installed when I put the adjustable Buttplate on. This gave alot more pitch than the previous however, the inside edgeof the toe does touch first so maybe I should sand it down some more. What surprised me is rotating the pad out did not appear to have any change on my canting. The only effect I saw was with moving my comb in towards my face. I have now added four washers to my comb in effort to keep my head more vertical, could the comb height be impacting cant? I really wish I could add more comb to get my head up straight.
Another clue is when I rotate the gun eliminating cant the top of the rib doesn't appear horizontal to me. Given adjustable butt, comb & rib can I start all over in some sequence to better effect?
Not to throw another variable in but check your stance as long as your working these issues. Some times, just turning toward the gun a little bit can make all the differance. (your body not your head)- Dan
get a small level that is magnetic or attach a magnet
mount it and dont move your head- move the gun to you and not your head to the gun
look in a mirror while you do this
now adjust the butt ( assuming an adjustable butt) and comb- until you get both adjusted so that each time you mount it- the gun is level
put the level across the muzzle end
