A shooting buddy of mine was at a garage sale and found and bought a 25 pound bag of number 12 shot. I've never seen any thing that small before. Anyone know what that size shot was used for?
Commonly referred to as "trash shot". Talk about losing energy in a hurry----out of a .22 and under a foot, will blow thru 1/2" plywood. At 5 feet, you can certainly see where it's entered the plywood, 10 feet, looks like scratches on the wood, at 15 feet only the biggest shot will show a mark on the wood. I've shot rats at probably------20-22 feet, they just jumped straight up and hit the ground running.
back in the mid to late 50's win. made shells that were used for turkey shoots. they may have been made for something else but that is what we in alabama used them for. this was for shooting paper targets maybe 6-8in. sq. with a X on it. you shot it at 40 yrds. and the person with a pelet the closet to the center of the X won. the shells were called 2-2-10 ,2-2-11, and 2-2-12. that was 2 oz. shot 2 dram. powder, and eather # 10, or 11, or # 12 shot. sone times the pot was for a turkey, goat, ham, qt. white lighting, or money. you name it , it was shot off.
Sportshot- No, nothing smaller than 9s or bigger than 7 1/2s. It'd be worthless for skeet anyways, about as much value as spreader loads or difussion chokes LOL.
Speer used to make plastic capsules that you can load with shot and than load in a pistol cartridge. They made them in .38 and .45 calibers. I always loaded them with 9's for snakes. 9's work fine on copperheads if you hit them in the head.
The .22 LR shot shells all use 12's. Some are advertized as containing 9's but they are really 12's.
The .22 shotshells are effective on carpenter bees out of my Remington smoothbore!!
Back in the middle sixties had a college wildlife professor at Purdue Uviv. used to shoot bats with #12 shot in .410 shells that he handloaded. He collected the bats for research. Said it was the best, most effective way to drop a bat without damage.
