Handicap punch question??????

Was at a shoot recently and shot a 91 and 93 from 20 yard line in a 200 bird event, as did another shooter. The high score was 188 and took the champion trophy, which put me in a shoot off for the class win, which I won. No punch, right? Later on, in a 100 bird handicap, I shot 92, as did another shooter, both in short yardage. The high score was 93, shot by a short yardage shooter and a long yardage shooter. In the shoot off,
the short yardage shooter won, taking the champion trophy and leaving me in a shoot off again, for the short yardage trophy, which I lost this time, but recieved a half yard punch for. Is this the way it should have been? Haven't gotten the ins and outs of these punches figgered out yet. Was told that because of the number of shooters, I won the half yard. Thanks in advance for your replys.

Above is the link to the current rulebook.

With 70-124 shooters, the shooter(s) with 1st highest SCORE gets a yard, 2nd gets 1/2 yard.

When multiple handicap events are shot in one day that had different shooters in each handicap event the number of different shooters are to be counted for use of the Earned Yardage Table to determine punches based on the combined score.

We need more info -- like number of participants, where your score came in for the event overall(1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc - NOT in yardage group). You do not get punches for winning your yardage group, however, punches can go down 4 scores from the champion score depending on the number of shooters.

Despite what lumper says, there is no real interpertation to punches. They are pretty cut and dry.

A copy of the rule book can be found above. I will comment that in a 200 bird event, each 100 bird sub-event will get its own punches. From page 22 - "When a Handicap marathon event consisting of more than 100 targets is
shot, each 100-target sub-event must not begin prior to the awarding of
earned yardage based on the previous 100 targets. Shooters earning
yardage must shoot subsequent sub-events from the new yardage."

Rule E about Earned Yardage starts on page 24 and spells out how to award earned yardage.

There is also a special rule to catch people shooting marathons and not getting punches:

VI.E.6.

6. When multiple Handicap events are shot during the same day with
fewer than 15 contestants, yardage will be awarded the high score(s),
under the earned yardage table, by combining the total number of
different individual shooters in all events with fewer than15 shooters.
25
For example;
Event 1 - 14 shooters, Event 2 - 20 shooters, Event 3 - 12 shooters (3
of whom shot Event 1), Event 4 - 13 shooters (5 of whom shot Event1
and/or Event 3). Event 2 stands on it’s own because it has more than
15 shooters. Combining Events 1, 3, 4 total of 31 different shooters
(14, 9, 8). The high score among those 31 shooters will receive a ½
yard punch based on the earned yardage table.

That's why I was asking how may shooters there were. If it was good size shoot (i.e. more than 15 shooters per 100 targets) then the punches are handled differently if it was smaller -- again, black and white.

hippie, downlod the rule book and read it... most shooters don't or only have a mild grasp of the rules. I am a little bit of a "rules geek" (ask anyone who shoots at the Indiana State), but knowing the rules can really help you in certain situations, like the one you experienced. You can make sure that management gave you the correct punch(es). They are human and can make mistakes (I have in awarding punches at Evansville) without even knowing it.

I always have one in my shooting bag. Most gun clubs have extras and if not, you can e-mail the ATA and they will mail you one. Heck, I would mail you one if you throw me an e-mail. Just drop the XXXs.

Here's one that always trips people up: say you shoot a 98, are the high score for a shoot of 500 people and you win $2,000 in added money and options -- what is your punch? This is a little easier now that the verbage in rule book is cleaned up, but when they first passed the rule for the money, it was a little tough.
