Remington Nitro Gold Loads

I'm in the middle of a discussion with MIA about the photo he published in Jimmy's load thread: http://www.trapshooters.com/noframes/cfpages/sthread.cfm?threadid=165738&Messages=25#1800244

We've all seen those gray ash looking hulls after firing new Nitro's. I'm loading 19gr of Clays/Clay Dot with 1 1/8oz of mag shot with FIG-8s wads. The hull inside is burned black and recovered wads, the same, not to mention the melted plastic coating inside the tube and choke. It seems to me that the gray ash indicates less heat, and melted plastic, thus a cleaner burn. I went to the Remington website via the provided link from Jimmy's thread, and they tell everything...NOT!

The question? Who's using what powder that gives the gray ash look to their reloads? Did Titegroup give these results when Remington was loading with this powder? I'm thinking of going to International or Green dot, with the rationalization that slower burning rates might result in less fire.

Your thoughts, please .....mike

It was Titegroup, NOT Titewad.

Remington is no longer buying powder from Hodgdon for the Nitro 27 shells.

I do not know what they're using now.

Mike, I heard they are using a proprietary blend now. Not an off the shelf powder like TiteGroup. I have cut some open and there is about 18.4 grains in them. The powder is a silvery looking small flake. I would just like to know what they chrono. LOL I guess I'm going to have to buy one myself to find out. They use a TGT12S wad in them also. I am going to load up some Titegroup and some International and Unique and pick one of those for practice. I really like the new ones for competition though.

Yeah, Jimmy, I read that in your thread. A small charge of very fine, dense powder would explain why they're using those wads instead of Fig 8's. I'd sure like find out what that powder is, or one like it, to stop scorching hulls.

Um, sorry about mixing up TiteGroup with some of my Tightwad buddies. (grin) ....mike

Remington is using either a proprietary blend or more likely a wholesale version of TiteGroup that is not blended to tight specifications of the retail version, so Remington gets it cheaper. Remington then just develops the load data for each batch. Kind of like when we open a new keg to get the right bushing to use.

I think that your best bet to duplicate the current Nitro 27 is to start at 18 gr of TiteGroup; Rem 209P, Rem TGT12S and tweak it to get the same velocity as the factory shell. Having a chronograph is a must. Unless about is good enough.

Mike Only one thing to add to the above, switch to the DRRT12 wad from Downrange manufacturing instead of the Rem TGT12. I used to think that Claybuster wads left a lot of plastic in the chokes until I shot the Remington STS and Nitro 27 factory ammo and reloads of PROMO, Clay Dot and e3 using the Remington TGT12 wad. The Downrange wad leaves MUCH less plastic in the chokes and performs great.

Only one word of caution. Watch the pressures with some of the top loads using Titegroup. I remember declining to use Titegroup for such loads after seeing the pressure data. I will use Titegroup, but not at the higher pressures. There are powders that will give me the same velocities without the high pressures.

Whiz

WST in a Remington hull does not seem to work well, pressure wise. The top loads listed for 1 1/8 oz of shot are 1145 fps, if my memory serves me. It fares a bit better in the AA hull and had been advertised as the "Factory Load Duplication" for Winchester AA Target loads.
