A relative we were talking with, uses a Brother "typewriter" or word processor. Since we have not used the Brother machine we could use some help. The person was typing and the "machine" started giving numbers and perecnt signs and other numerical and/or signs instead of letters.

Is this a certain key? Would a re-start like a re-boot with a computer fix this? This person will not consider a computer and would rather have a typewriter. All help appreciated. Michael and Jane

Typewriter, now there is a word that I have not heard in years. When I was but a young boy, I used to work on typewriters in my dads business. Manual and electric. Just prior to the computer era. Too bad he lost his mind and the business.

Back to the brother though, if it does not have actual "keys", or a ball in some late cases, it is not a typewriter.

I just recently encountered a similar problem with an old Brother typewriter. In this case the typewriter was a daiseywheel model. Some of the keys on the keyboard had 3 different letters or symbols on them. First, I removed the wheel from the machine and turned it to ascertain that it actually had the symbol I was looking for. Then placed it back inside the machine. Then I looked on the keyboard for an alternate location for the symbol (the question mark symbol was on the upper case number 3). That resolved the problem. Also, if it is an old daiseywheel typewriter, make sure the spokes are all there they were prone to breaking if the strike pressure wasn't set correctly.

Hope that helps.
