Brian,

You may or may not have to. I had one that I had a total of 4 different barrels on it and none had to be fitted. One of the barrels had to be timed, but all fit well without any mods.

My experience is that if you buy a NEW barrel, it will have to be fitted, but if you can find one off of a gun, like at Joel Etchen Guns, it will most likely not require fitting..but be safe and measure head space before you shoot it!....Bolsa Gunsmithing in California did my new 682 Gold E Top Single that I got from Mike Battista that was new from the factory, did a great job, $65.00 plus shipping....LarryB

You're making a mountain out of a molehill....

it's not that complicated and doesn't require headspace alignment checks...

682, 686, 687 Mobil choke barrels are all interchangable, occasionally a Forend may need adjustments for the 2nd barrel...

it's one of the great things about owning a Beretta....

I'll describe briefly, what you cn check for....

Install the bbl into the receiver until the top lever trips. If you see a gap in the breach face, it maty come from two different things.

The first is the bbl is not closing all the way. Generally you can tell by the position of the top lever. It will be positioned quite far to the right. This should be fitted by a gunsmith.

The second reasom for a gap is there is not enough material on the breach face of the bbl to reach the receiver. The bigger the gap, the more likely there can be a headspace issue. You can read this from another thread here on TS.com.....http://trapshooters.com/noframes/cfpages/sthread.cfm?ThreadID=158827

If the beach faces are tight to one another, it's highly unlikely there would be a headspace problem. The only problem that could occur is that the locking bolt holes are worn (used bbl), and a new locking bolt will need to be fitted....along with re-fitting any original bbl.

Three more things will need to be addressed for the bbl ti be fitting properly and to function properly. Those are....the fit of the forend iron and wood (if too loose, welding will need to be done), timing the forend latch to click shut at the correct time, and timing of the ejectors.

To have a gunsmith check things out, the charges could run from $35(everything is just fine) to a couple hundred dollars (new locking bolt fitted, tightening the forend iron, re-timing the ejectors, etc.
