IM vs F

Back in the early 1980's I had a BT-99 32" IM My brother-in-law had a Y model 12 Full. We patterned these and they both came in between 75% adn 80%. Don't remember if it was with reloads or new. If reloads they were probably 18-18.5g red dot with a aa wad a aa shell and a federal primer.

Any way here is my questions.

With the new shells of today do we really need a Full choke to get a high percentage pattern? or would a IM work from the 16's to the 27?

Also one more I have a 682 gold E combo 32" and 34" top single - how good are the factory chokes and would it be worth the cost to spring for some after market opmta choke and whose???

thanks

Mike- The shell components we have today are about the same as we had in 1980. I like full chokes, but a true IM choke would work.

The choke in your 682 might be outstanding, or it could be bored not parallel with the rest of the barrel and cause your gun to shoot well to the side and produce very poor patterns. The only way to tell is to check it on paper.

Only 2 of the chokes that came with my 682 Gold E combo shot to the same POI. What was printed on the chokes was a figment of someone's imagination. I can't say they performed or patterned well either. A quick call to Briley and I had chokes for all barrels. They all did shoot to the same POI, and all but one patterned well. The replacement for the bad performer was up to snuff.

If I had it to do over, I'd try Stu Wright's chokes.

If you check out Browning's website shown above you will find out a facinating difference between Fixed chokes and Invector choke tubes. In the early 80's a BT-99 with a fixed Improved Modified choke barrel would have .032 constriction the difference between .727 boresize and .695 chokesize. Todays Invector Plus Improved Modified choke tube is rated to be about .022 constriction or yesterday's Modified. Personally I use .028 choke for Singles and .036 for Handicap. I didn't think the Browning factory Full Invector choke tube was tight enough for long yardage Handicap but a Wright's choke tube would fill the bill.
