I'm a lefty and have the chance to buy a nice used LH Remington Model 700 BDL in .308 Winchester. I currently have a LH Ruger M77 Mark II in .30-06 so I probably don't really need the .308. My question is that I've never owned a 700 bdl before or a .308. How do you rhink it would compare to my Ruger? The rifle would primarily be used for white tail deer hunting. Thanks for any info...Randy

I've had both in the LH version, I still have my LH 700 BDL in 270. I think the Rem. is a much better gun, solid machined receiver vs. cast, fit and finish is usually much better. Rem. LH short actions are hard to come by also.
A 308 is a great round for just about anything in the lower 48. Most US Sniper rifles use this round, widely available anywhere and a huge choice of mfg's and bullet weights.
Also, most custom rifles use Remington receivers, down the road if you want a nice LH, short action custom, you have the most important part.

Thanks jmbi for the info. I agree w/all the things you said about the Remington. The things that turned me on about the Ruger were the Mauser extraction and stainless steel receiver & barrel. I will probably sell the Ruger now....I really don't see any reason to keep them both...and I could use the money for a nice scope...Thanks again....Randy

I have found both the 308 and the 30/06 to be so delightful to shoot, reload, and obsess over that I have one of each caliber in two Ruger All Weather rifles set up with a Leupold Vari-X III 4 1/2X14 scope with "tuned" triggers. I enjoy them both, and could not pick one over the other to sell. The 308 is more accurate, but they are both game rifles. I like the controlled feed and the three position safety on a game rifle. These are bell ringers out to their maximum (for me) range of 300 yards.

My two precision thirty caliber rifles are 308's. A Remington M700 Varmint Special heavy barrel, and a Browning A Bolt II Varmint BOSS. Both have 24X Leupold benchrest scopes.

The Browning will outshoot the Remington, hands down. The Remington is no slouch. One must get past 300 yards to see the difference. The Browning has a Moyers trigger, the Remington has a carefully stroked factory trigger.

All four rifles have a 50 oz trigger pull with no creep. Fifty ounces is my preferred weight for most any rifle. This way, I have the same feel with any of my rifles, with the sole exception of my AR-15 Patrol Rifle.

If you want to see an obsessed person, you should see my rifle cartridge loading technique! LOL
