Got an SD San Kisk memory card for my digital camera for Christmas--it is a
256 MB. The camera is a Kodak 7440.
Anyone have any idea at all of approximately how many pictures a memory card of this size will hold?
Thank you............Merry Christmas to all.
Bill

It is snowing like crazy out right now--a white Christmas and one of the few in the last 100 years in this area. Must be the global warming.

Read your camera instructions. The number of images you can store on your card will change with how high quality you need. If you're only going to make regular size pictures, low quality is all that you'll need. If you're planning on making large or poster sized prints, you need a higher pixel count and thus images per card.

It makes a lot of difference in the quality of pictures you are taking. Depending on the megapixel of your camera and what you set it on determines how many pictures you can get on that card. I have a 6.0 megapixel and just leave it on the highest setting and it will hold almost 400 pictures. Some folks will change the quality setting in the camera but I don't as I never know when I will want to blow one of them up and if you choose to blow up one part of the picture the quality of that blow up is determined by the quality of the original picture. I am not a professional but love to take pictures and have learned to use the best film in regular camera's or highest setting in digitals. If you have any questions I will be glad to try to answer them with an email or call me at 912 449 1010. Jackie B.

Over a hundred, I'd say, with medium quality. It does depend on the quality you set the camera for. I just got my first digital camera (guess that means I'm now into the 20th Century) and my medium-resolution pics use about 1.5-2.5 megs each. Mine's a Canon SD850 IS. A 2-Gig card in it set at medium-quality gives me 934 pics. If your camera will take bigger cards (1-2 Gig) you want to get one. A 2-Gig Sandisk can be had through Amazon.com for $20-30. Phil E

OK, I looked up the specs for the Kodak 7440.

The minimum resolution pic is 1.1 megapixels. It takes 3 information channels for each megapixel (8-bit data). So we multiply 1.1 by 3 = 3/3 megabyte per photo. Now we divide the 256 mb memory card by 3.3 mb per pic = roughly 77 photos.

At the max resolution of 4 megapixel per pic times a factor of three equals 12 mb per pic. 256 mb divided by 12 equals roughly 21 pics.

Obviously one of the first things you're going to want are memory cards in the gigabyte range. To figure out how many pics at max resolution, divide a gigbyte by 12mb. Since we're now dealing with very large sizes, a gigabyte is not 1,000,000,000 bytes, but is actually 1,073,741,824 bytes (this is because it's actually 2 to the 30th power, not 10 to the 9th power). Just trust me and divide 1,073,741,824 by 12mb = about 89 photos.

So, for the Kordak 7440 every 1 gb you get 89 photos at max resolution, and if we use the minimum resolution you get 357 pics per 1 gb.

So multiply those numbers by how many gigabytes are in the card you are considering buying.

(Note that this is approximate, because I did not use the exact figure for a megabyte, which is is 1,048,576 bytes, not 1,000,000. If you want to be more exact, use this figure. It's only going to make a small differnce in the number of photos.)

As you can see from the different listing not all camera's are alike. I looked up Kodak, which is what I presently have and are listed as follows:
256 MB-SD/mmc Best- 160 Best(3.2)- 179 Better- 242 Good- 415
I failed to note that I have a 1 Gig card in my camera but have 5 or 6 cards for different uses. Jackie B.
