I like the .264 or 6.5 bullet.I would be using it for silhouette and hunting.I have been becoming more and more interested in wildcat loads. The ballistics on this round on paper seem fantastic.I can pick one up with a 700 receiver and of coarse a custom barrel from an estate.Any opinions,I know it is a little obscure. The price is right.I also happen to have plenty of components to load this round. What do you think? Thanks.

Darr,

Not a particularly good silhouette cal but it is a fine hunting round. Silhouette guns are usually larger bullets at slower velocity. That seems to transmit energy to steel better than high velocity lighter bullets. Other than that if it trips your trigger go for it. The best guns are the ones you like.

I will Jump in here with P O Ackleys, canned response.

In any overbore cartridge, going to a larger bore, even one that is Just A few thousendths larger is an improvement!

I don't think you are going see many feet per seconds more, then if you chambered a 6.5 X 57 Improved, or maybe call it 6.5 by 257 Roberts improved. For a few years now the 6.5 284 win, has been a highly regarded target round, that is a short case with the (or is it almost the) same powder capacity as the "06".

So buy what you want, or make up what you want, and see what you are able to do with it.

Have fun and enjoy shooting something that is a little odd!

Depends on what you are looking for – I have not had a 6.5-06. I have had 6.5-284, 6.5-280 and 6.5-08. When you go to a 6.5-284, accuracy is outstanding – however barrel life (for long range – 1000 yds) – is not that good. The 6.5-280 would have a little more powder capacity than a 6.5-06 but not enough to mention – I have used this round to take several deer and it works great – I can’t speak to barrel life cause I have not shot it that much 500 rounds or so.
I have a 6.5-08 (a.k.a. – 260 Remington) – for deer etc , it is all you need – I have taken white tail deer out to 350 yds with it. I use to shoot NRA High-power with a 6.5-08 and barrel life is very good. Recoil is light --- If I were building a “light weight” rifle for deer, antelope, and coyotes – etc …. the 6.5-08 would be my choice.

Mike,I have a 6.5X55 mauser. It is an old swedish mauser. That gun is damn accurate but has one hell of a trajectory. That gun is what got me interested in the .264.The long range shooters in our club are shooting the 6.5X.284 and doing very well.I just want to move the .264 a little faster and flatter and as I said I have lots of components for it and it comes with the dies and loaded ammo.It will be an odd ball for sure but it will also be alot of fun.

I used a 6.5x06 for several years on both deer and elk. The 140's were good for elk, and I used both 120's and 140's on deer. it was a nice cartridge and performed well for me. Very flat trajectory, which once helped on a cow elk at 400 yards.

Eventually I went back to the classic 30-06 in a G&H Springfield Sporter.

A wildcat is for FUN. Shooting an extreme round you cannot buy is FUN. The 6.5/06 might be better in an improved version. Less case stretching, better high pressure performance. These overbore rounds shine with heavy bullets, 140 and heavier, with SLOW powders.

Years ago, I had a 25 Gibbs built for long range shooting. To say it was impressive at 400 yards was an understatement. The 6.5 Gibbs or Ackley Improved would be better. The Gibbs holds a little more powder, is a little more trouble to load. The Ackley Improved MUST be headspaced with a No-Go gauge. The Gibbs' false shoulder can be set when you neck down and trim 270 Winchester brass. H4831 is about the FASTEST powder usable in these rounds.

If I were going for something extreme today, I might consider the 7mm Rem Ultra Mag necked to 6.5. The original 264 Win Mag is still around, but either might be better with a 28" barrel, Reloder 25, H1000, or IMR7828 and the 155 SMK. These are NOT plinkers.
