I removed the covers from the realoding press and have decided to return to relaoding. Over the years I have been using 1-1/8th oz loads. I need to order some wads and was wondering what your thought are about going to 1oz. loads vs. an 1-1/8 oz. for the 16 - 20 Yard positions. Look forward to your thoughts. Thanks in advance form responding.

On those rare occasions when I can actually keep my head down, not bead check, my 7/8oz 1,300 fps load does a great job all the way back to the 23 yd line where I shoot hcp. Shot bottle on the reloader gets filled less frequently too. So, your 1 oz load should be fine.

If you are shooting registered targets and are interested in winning in any class, shoot 1 1/8 ounce, 2 3/4 dram shells because that's what the the other potential winners will be using against you and every average shooter needs every advantage he or she and legally can make use of. If you are a Daro Handy, in the center all the time, there's really not much difference, however.

If you are just having fun, shoot an ounce.

Remember, trapshooting is a long-long-term statistical experiment and even a hundred with one-ounce shells, while it does show that it "works," it is still an uphill fight against pellet count that will, every now and then, bite you and it may be at just the wrong time.

Remington STS shells made the point:

I load 17.2 of Clays with an ounce of 8s, WW209, WW pink wad in AA hulls. I use it for Sporting, 5 stand, Skeet, and Trap. I get asked a lot how tight my chokes are and when I have guys try the load they are always suprised how pleasent the recoil is. I carry some 7.5 for long Sporting shots and I an changing over one of my tool heads to load an ounce of 7.5 very soon.

Concerning wads you might use. You will find that for most of the hulls you will be reloading, a 1 1/8 ounce wad will do a really good job of loading one ounce loads and a one ounce wad will likewise work very well for 7/8 ounce loads. The crimp will be a little concave, but I never have any problems with holes in my crimps that would let shot fall out. This way you can either reduce your wad inventory or use old wads you might still have on hand for two loads. An example: Right now I'm using blue duster wads (1 1/8 ounce) for one ounce loads in AAHS, STS, and Nitro 27 hulls.

Making an accurate shot is more important than 1 oz or 1 1/8 oz. For 16 yard practice rounds I use 7/8 oz with 15 grains of International Clays powder. It's a lighter load than most 20 gauge factory shells, and it sure does help keep your component expenses down.

I'm pretty new to reloading my own shells, so right now all I'm loading is that 7/8 oz. For anything other than a 16 yard practice round, I use off the shelf ammo.

Is that a fat old man thing? I mean 1 1/8 or even a cry for 1 1/4 oz of shot? How do Olympic shooters excel with 7/8 oz loads when it would appear you absolutely must have heavier loads for the much easier ATA targets?

I like to shoot 1 oz but the guys I shoot against are very happy that I only shoot 1 oz---Wonder why---None of my competors shoot 1 oz---I can't tell the difference between 1 oz and 1 1/8 in recoil---Must just be me---I'm still shooting 1 oz with reclaim shot for practice----That's just me---Do as you will

The 1oz vs 1 1/8oz debate needs to be brought up every now and then for newer readers and for some of us senior readers who can't remember the last one.
Plus, it's always interesting to discuss.

I also am in the camp of those who greatly value Neil's knowledge and what he bases it on. Some people might be more comfortable and confident with 1 oz loads, and that's what they should shoot. Neil's post, however, deals with the LOGIC that all other things being equal, the more shot you throw at a target the more chance it has of being hit.

Makes sense to me.
