K32 Malfunction....

What is the most likely cause of light primer strikes (4 or 5 per 100) on a Kreighoff Model 32? Not shell related because it happens randomly with reloads, new Winchesters and new Remingtons.

It could be a broken firing pin- which rotates- when aligned the parts strike the primer normally- and when out of alignment abnormally

It also could be chipped firing pins that have been chipped by those cheap shells- and every now and then there just isnt enough indentation to cause the primer to detonate

Once the primer does detonate the pressure caused sends the base of the shell back against the breach as the powder ignites- so that pressue makes every shell that goes off appear as if it had a full primer strike

Could just be gummed up springs- or worn springs

I had the exact same on one of my 4 K-32's. It was a gummed up firing pin. I took the stock off,put 2 drops of Rem-Oil on the back of the pin & worked for about 5 minutes. Put the oil on the face of the pin & worked it from the back some more. You may have to do this several times to get all of the crud out of the pin/spring hole. It is a very easy, simple try to fix,one you can do yourself

On the gummed up part issue- really the best thing to do is take the buttsock off and spray the receiver inside with Brake Cleaner

Several times

Turning the receiver upside down and make sure you get all the parts - it should be dripping off on the ground

Do this several times- and you can spray from the face side of the receiver also but the inside is where you really want to concentrate your effort

Then let dry and spray with some light oil with a teflon additive such as rem oil- blot the excess off and try it then.

Entire procedure including removing the stock and putting it back will be less than 10 mins- make sure you do several floodings with the brake cleaner- and do not use carburator cleaner- brake cleaner by design will leave no residue

Entire cost of this cleaning- the price of 1/3 of a can (at most) of brake cleaner

In my experience- headspace problems dont just develop suddenly and it would be the bottom barrel with the problem usually unless some gunsmith has done something odd- that is the way the gun is designed

Headspace would have been a problem long before the gun doesnt fire- that much excess headspace is hard to picture if that is the only cause of this

Mike, this one did it before the annual, which supposedly included cleaning, lubing, springs and firing pins. The headspace and firing pin protusion was supposedly checked. None of that has stopped the light primer strikes. I can't believe it is ammo related because you can open the gun, close it and fire the same shell in the same barrel and get a nice primer indention and the shell fires normally.

Hmmmmmm! That is something I have never experienced.

I currently own six model 32's at least 40 yers old and have never had the problem you describe after an annual. However, I have had that exact problem before having an annual.

I'd send it back to the guy who replaced the springs and simply tell him in a nice way that it just isn't right.....
