I`m using a #19 bushing in a Mec grabber and want to start up my Hornady/Bair single stage for a few hundred special hulls dropping the same as the Mec which is 11.6 gr of Solo 1000 . What bushing would be close ?
I've never tried Solo 1000 but would think if you just looked at the bushings for a starting point size then WEIGH a few charges and adjust accordingly you should be able to hit it right on the nose. Ross
The inside diameter of a Mec #19 is approximately .350". Hornady makes a .345" (SKU 190137) or a .354" (SKU 190190). Ponsness Warren bushings will also fit in a Hornady press, and their D1 bushing is .3425" and their E is .363". This should get you pretty close on which bushing you need. As always, be sure to verify actual drop weight anytime you change bushings. I have a bunch of the Hornady bushings new in the package, if you want to buy several around this diameter, shoot me a PM and I can get back with you on exactly what sizes I have right around .350". Just checked my bushing chart but I guess it's too old doesn't list Solo 1000, "IF" memory serves me correctly????? S 1000 is a single base--dense-- powder so would probably take a small bushing maybe something in the 320 to 350 range. I load on a single stage 266 and have a lot of bushings just have never tried S 1000. Do you have a friend that has Pacific loader maybe you could borrow some bushings to try???? Wish I could be of more help. Ross
Thanks , I was thinking around 340-350 . I only will need it for about 200+ shells that would load well on the Mec so a personal touch is needed with my single station then that up for sale . I have many bushings but not that small . This Solo is for 20 ga shells and find that is great for my needs , very soft shooting .
Why not get a conversion bushing that lets you use your MEC bushings in your machines that take the Pacific/Hornady/PW style bushing? You can also make one from a spare Hornady bushing. It is a good thing to do if you are mostly set up with MEC equipment.
Since you're trying to match to the old MEC bushing that you still have - how about if you take it out of the powder/shot bar, place it on something solid, pour in some of the Solo 1000 powder until it is flush with the top of the bushing. Don't pack it in - the powder normally just drops into the bushing.
Brush away the excess. Then collect the powder that filled the bushing.
Now get a Hornady bushing that you think is about right, then pour in the powder that filled the MEC bushing.
alternatives to the powder might be salt (fine grained - cheap) or dry sugar (more expensive, but finer grained).
I haven't tried it myself, but seems it should get you pretty close.
That would be pretty hard to do at a store but thanks anyway . I`ll sell what I have . It`s on another thread .
