Titegroup or Green Dot for caps ?

I have been debating a new load for caps, and was all set to use green Dot, but then I got to looking at the data for Titegroup. It gets the same velocity (1250fps) but with 2 less grains of powder...18.4 for TG @ 11,400 psi vs. 21.5 @ 10,500 psi for GD. Seeing as it's only a few dollars more per 8lb jug it would be more economical than Green Dot. I will be loading in AA hulls with a DRXL 1 1/8 wad, and win primers. I know some say Titegroup was once used in the Nitro 27 shells. Have any of you done a comparison of these 2 powders and any pros or cons to either ?

Borderland, tell us where we can find this variation-velocity, drop accuracy?
I've loaded plenty of Tightgroup, weighed mucho charges and never noticed significant variation. I never chronographed any but I sometimes believe the charts are lying as recoil seems less with Tightgroup. I gave up on Green Dot many years ago because of drop inconsistencies!!

I thought that it was something very similisr to titegroup that Remington used for it's nitro 27's before it switched to the new powder. I thought that the recipe was 18.3 grains of titegroup, remington primer in a remington(sts or nitro) hull using a TGT wad with 1 1/8 ounce of lead.

I havfe loaded a lot of Titegroup over the last 5 or so years and like the way it performs. You kinda have to rethink your componets a bit as taller wads are needed for proper crimps (very dense powder). You'll also need to invest in much smaller powder bushings for your press. I never load more than 18.0 grains as it has the load traveling 1235fps (through the chrono) with that much powder.

I have also loaded with Green Dot and found it to be a very good powder to use. I still prefer Titegroup, but wouldn't have any issues loading with Green Dot.

Thats the whole thing about titegroup of the low charge weight it is so dence that there is only Maybe one-two tenth of a drop change at the best it is the most accurate powder I ever used and you can duplicate the sts or nitro loads with it . And the recoil is wonderful 1200 3Dram loads work great for HC and 2 3/4 DR 8's or 7.5 work wonderful for sixteens. Use it you will love it anybody.

LIGHT RECOIL, NO DIRTY BARRELS.

Well one of the things that led me toward possibly trying Titegroup is the fact it is a lil denser. With the AAHS hull and the DRXL 1 1/8 wad and 18 grains of Promo it's a very tight fit. I was thinking I might get a little better fit with the Titegroup. Thanks for the replies, and keep em coming.

I suppose I could work up a 7/8 ounce load using Promo too for a Handicap load. I guess it comes down to speed/pattern/pressures. For me, I like to take as much of the guess work out of my point of aim. I like a flat shooting gun. I like speed. Will 7/8 ounce loads work? Well, since I don't see anyone using it I guess not. At least not well enough. I may well try a 7/8 load just to 'up' my game. Then again, if I can't duplicate the same speed and pattern with a 1 1/8th load, why bother? Jim

The thing I don't really like about Titegroup is that it is a high density powder and you can't really tell by inspection if you somehow got a lite charge or if the occaisional minor dishing of the crimp has to do with normal variations in hull volume. I have been on a few goose chases cutting up otherwise good STS hulls only to find the charge weights were correct. I have also had a few no powder bloopers get past my inspection and I really didn't like that.

With Green Dot you occupy a larger portion of the hull volume with the powder charge and the minor volume variations that exist within the same make of hull don't have a significant effect on the crimp quality. It is pretty obvious when you have a powder charge problem when using Green Dot. Also Green Dot has a fairly wide range of safe loads where as the pressures go up very quickly with Titegroup.

What Titegroup is really really good for is pistol ammo.

I like Titegroup:) I like Green Dot too, but it is a little dirtier, both on my machine and on my gun.

If you cut open a factory Nitro 27 (1 1/8th) you will find powder that looks exactly like Titegroup. Around 18.5 grains of it. All of the details have already been hashed out, but the factory N27 clone works very well in my gun.

BTW, one good argument for Green Dot is that you could use only one wad for everything (singles and Caps). I have equal stock in Fig8S and TGT12S wads...along with a few others.

As far as I'm concerned 1 1/8oz of hard shot and around 20gr of GD is the gold standard for a handicap load. Good patterns, recoil is a gentle push and about any wad or hull seems to work. I personally use Rem hulls with DR F8's and a cheddite primer.
GD is not the best choice for 1oz and lighter in my experience. I tried Titegroup and it seemed the recoil was worse for equal shot weight and velocity.

Both powders are excellent, and you will be pleased with either.

I personally like Hodgdon products because they are a small, family owned company, and I personally know some of the family members.

And by the way, guess what, Titegroup is made in the USA too. Throw out that lame argument.
