I'm a reloading IDIOT....Now what?

<dunce cap installed>
<prepaired for ribbing>

I'm spending a nice bit of quiet time loading up some rounds for Sunday. I changed out the bar from a 1 1/8 to a 1oz so I had to get the powder all settled into the loader so it throws nice consistant loads. I run a couple "Put it back in the bottle" throws just to get it all settled in the bottles. I"m using a single stage so it's Powder.....shot....powder.....shot.

I have two distinctly marked recepticals that I throw the powder into and then weigh it, then throw the shot into and weigh it. Then I dump those recepticals back into the bottles. (You know what's coming don't you?) Yeah......A half bottle of Clays just got about 20 grains of 7 1/2 shot dumped into it.

Do I worry about this? will a little shot in the powder charge hurt anything? I realize if all 20 grains make it into one shell I'm probably going to be severly under powdered, but how would I get the shot out of the powder in the bottle if that's truely what should be done?

<heavy sigh.......> so much for the nice relaxing load time.

get a plastic bowl - good size one- Pour your powder in. Shake it - like panning for gold. The shot will drop to the bottom, scoop out some powder, shake some more and so on. eventually you"ll separate the shot and powder. If you have a Gold Panning dish, that will be perfect.

No big deal, just separate shot from powder. It easy to do with a couple of plastic containers. Takes a little time but just very slowly pour on side of container and separate. Keep doing it until the shot is out of the powder. I have done this a few times myself.

swipe the sifter from the kitchen or buy one from the store. the one with a basket that looks like window screen. You know a handle on one side like a tea strainer but alttle bigger pattern to the screen have one on your bench always to brush those spills of powder and shot into. It will trap the shot and let most powders fal right through. Bill

I did this once, I used a 5 galleon bucket, plastic bowl and a small electric fan. I held the bowl low and tilted in the bucket shaking it gently and let fan gently blow the powder out of the bowel so it drifted to the bottom of the bucket. It was a ten minute process.

Don't be so hard on yourself. Inadvertently mixing a little dab of powder and shot is just part of the process. Thank goodness it isn't a hanging offense. There wouldn't be enough guys left at the gun club to start an argument. : )

PS: Count me among those that use an old kitchen strainer. It takes me longer to pull it out of the loading bench drawer than it does to use it.

The answer to your question would depend on the size of the mesh. Mine is about like an old screen door. I've never tried it with 9's but it easily catches #8's and larger.

I don't have any regular Clays right now but International and Universal pass right thru. The largest flake powder I have at the moment is 800X. 800X takes a little more shaking but it goes thru the mesh too.
