I have been looking at SO's and it appears that the metal on the sideplates shows all kinds handling marks very easily. Is this really the case?

cabman, in a word, Yes.

Beretta, for whatever reason, does not case-harden their steel after engraving, and it marks easily and obviously. That may be because they use low-carbon steels, or some other reason.

That is also the case for their higher grades, too. They are likewise soft and show every ding.

Being a forced into retirement machine shop owner this info is very interesting to me as Beretta makes our military side arms and police use their products too.
I don't own anything made by them, not because they are not well made or not reliable, it's because I don't consider it a good idea to build their company up over local ones. Even though they may own property and company's in the USA I still am against supporting them with my dollars. If they were the only option around then maybe I would change my thinking. Before that happens I would build my own myself. Before that happens my Dad's Model 12 has to go "belly up".

Oh Wow regards,
