Trade Weatherby for Browning BPS? - done

Looking for advice. I'm just getting into trap as I follow my son around in the AIM program. I'm saving up for an entry level trap gun. In the meantime I'm practicing with a Weatherby PA-08 pump 28" barrel that I won in a raffle. At only 5.5 pounds and a rock hard recoil pad it is brutal on the shoulder. Of course it's also a field gun so the fit is marginal.

I was just offered a trade for a used Browning BPS hunter model with a 28" barrel. The Weatherby is in LNIB condition (only 250 rounds thru it) and the BPS is in good-very good condition. Both are field guns but the BPS is about 2 pounds heavier and seems to have real nice balance for the trap line. I'm thinking the BPS would be a better gun for me to continue to learn trap due to it's weight. Thought I might even find a monte carlo stock on the cheap for the BPS.

Thoughts? Should I make this trade? It would be his BPS + $50.00 cash for my Weatherby. And I have nothing in the Weatherby since I won it.

Thanks.

If the BPS has choke tubes, I'd make the trade. The BPS is a bit trickier to load a shell for trap, but once you get the hang of it, it's second nature. The Weatherby is a Turkish gun with Weatherby's name on it. I'm guessing it would have very little resale a few years from now. The BPS is a classic. See if you can shoot the BPS, and if you like it, go for it. It sounds like he is adding in the cash in the trade. If that is the case, do it right now! An even swap would also probably be fair. If yoy are kicking in the cash, I'd still do it, because I see the BPS as an upgrade. My $.02 Mark

You would definately be trading up.

The BPS may or may not make a good trap gun for you but it will always be a good hunting shotgun and decent trading stock.

I recently replaced a but stock on a trap model BPS and the new stock cost $175 direct from Browning. Something to consider on your trade decision.

Squeeze him for another 50 bucks, and you'll still be o.k. The bps probably has a full choke so your good for trap. take it to a local gun shop and have it looked at for wear and get the choke checked. if it's mod it's no deal. Strictly a field gun then. jmho Bill Wheeler

Fixed choke isn't a deal buster. Full would be best for trap but for 16yd and short yardage HC the mod choke will work too. Like slayer said, you can use this as a bargaining chip but even if he doesn't sweeten the pot you are still looking at a good trade.

Thanks for all the input. I just completed the deal. Got the BPS and $50.00 in trade for my Weatherby. The BPS turns out to have a modified fixed choke but for a beginner at the 16 yard line I figured this would be fine. Wood is in great condition and a nice dark brown. And with a slightly straighter butt stock than the Weatherby the BPS also seems to fit me better. Looking forward to giving it a run.
