I finally loaded my last bag of $15 shot today. I have 5 flats 1 1/8oz, 7 flats of 1oz shells, and 5 flats of 7/8oz at the ready. I'm not sure what I'll do once the ammo runs out. At what componets cost today, I'd be spending nearly $5 a box to reload my own.

I still have some of the $11.50 bags in my storage, I haven't reload for a few years since I bought 80 cases of Kemen shells @$30~35 per case.

The only reason I reload is for the 7/8 oz loads. Hard to come by at reasonable prices.

YOU LUCKY BAST***S!!!!! Me and my son shoot and I have talked two of his friends into shooting as well. His friends buy shells from me insted of buying them, I charge $5 a box. that is almost what it costs me to re-load. Now, imagine having to provide shells for 4 shooters with shot up to $35.00 a bag, you can imagine how much re-loading I do and how much money I spend. This week I re-loaded 2,400 rounds. And I still have about 4,000 yet to re-load. I would kill for $11.50 or even $15.00 bags of shot. I know I should not complain in total we have brought at lest 10 youngsters into the sport. I am doing my best to make sure the sport lives on after I am gone.

Well I still have 3-4 bags of $12 shot & about 8 of the $15 left. I go thru 6-10 bags a yr now that I do registered skeet. Just lucked into 6 bags of 9(skeet)for $25. Yup the days of walking into a pawn shop & finding 4 bags of 7 1/2 Lawerence @ $10 a bag lying on the floor are over.

You people voted for all of this so don't bitch. And if you didn't vote at all then don't bitch at all.

If you don't want to loose it all then you better spread the word and wake up sleepers who think the other guy will lookout for the better. Wild Bill

"You people voted for all of this so don't bitch"

What??? Thats a pretty cut-throat statement. Where did you get your info? I gotta hear this one.

I know i didn't vote for the POS and don't personally know anybody who did. I think you should Speak for yourself..........

I'm with wolfram on this. The price of lead started going up from $12.50/$12.75 per bag in April, 2004. Thats the last time my friends and I were able to buy 3 and 1/2 tons at that price. As I recall it was in the $30.00s under Bush, but that wasn't his fault. Demand for lead and other metals has driven the price up and once its up, it doesn't come down nearly as fast as it rises.

This is just a guess and pure speculation, but if all shotgun sports would cease (no purchases of shot or shells made) for 1 full year, I can't help but think the price of lead would come down drastically. However, as long as we keep buying at $35.00 to $38.00 per bag, the price will not come down.

I think the shooting sports are minor players on the lead market, batteries and nuclear reactor sheilding are the big consumers.

But the price increases aren't exclusive to lead, the story is about the same for all industrial metals and for the same reasons -the cost of fuel and labor plus high demand from industrializing nations.

wolf, I agree...

Shotgun sports can't be but a pimple on a bulls butt compared to the industrial uses - especially after you subtract out all the reclaimed and re-dropped and recycled shot.

Saw on another thread that lead was $.86/lb ( i think)...well, that makes the raw cost of a bag of shot $21.50.

so once you buy the lead from the mine...you have to ship it to your tower, melt it (lots of energy there), drop it, cool it, bag it, pallet it, and ship it to the retailer. Plus make a profit on that.

The retailer has to pay labor to stock it, ring it up, and the overhead for the facility. And make a profit on it.

If you can buy shot today for $36 (I paid that in June)...I'd sure HATE to do all that for $14.50 - the gross profit available after you bought the raw lead.

Seems like doing all that for $14.50 would make for some pretty thin soup....

I shoot 1.5 bags /week. At $38/bag, I'm still loading for well under $4/box. At $50/bag, I'll still be happily loading for $5/box. With the money I just saved by switching oil suppliers for the coming heating season, I can buy another 30 bags or so.

I'm one of those SOBs that has gone over to the darkside of factory loaded ammo. I always thoght I would be the last goof ball pulling the handle on a shotshell loader - it is something I had done since I was a teen-ager.

I still have all the stuff including a few bags of shot but my last 40 flats of ammo have all been factory loaded Estates. Man is it a great feeling to just crack that action open and let those hulls fly. No messing around with hulls and hunting for deals on powder, primers, shot ... Just order the stuff, write a check and shoot it. Beautiful.....

But never say never - I will probably go back to rolling my own again when the prices on the factory stuff go way beyond my component prices.

Ah foggy I don't know if the skunk grade will help you... I was talking with one of the oldtimers at the club one day. An all around nice guy that had won the Grand American HC in the 70's with a lone 100 straight. We were talking about that event which he used a Model 12 to win! I asked him about purchasing it, and he informed me that the shooter he promised to had died a couple years ago. I said if you ever want to sell it let me know. A couple of sundays later he comes into the club and said that the Mdl 12 was out in the car if I still wanted it! We went right to the bank, and I now own a part of trapshooting history...

I haven't made it to the CCQC yet. I was invited by a fellow that I met in the Hoptown WallyWorld. Nice guy, but I contracted for the building and been just too busy to do anything. i haven't shot anything this year except for some doves down there.

So I have a gun that can't miss so the skunk grade may have met his match. I will be in touch my friend. Stay frosty, Rick Gibbs
