Two things to look at/for, end of the firing pins and feel the trigger for good consistant pull weight. Springs are easy to change and so are the firing pins.

I had one of those 685's some years back and it was a well built, good handling gun.

I purchased a new 685 probably in the early 90s. Had some trouble with the triggers when I first got it, also had an extractor that broke.

At the time "Briley" made chokes for the gun, and I had a few of those with the gun. Don't know if they still make chokes for SKB or not.

Good gun, with the screw in chokes you can use the gun for everything: sporting clays, trap, trap doubles, and skeet. I ended up trading for a 3200 though.

I have a 700 Ithaca, 500 in 410, 605 sporter and 85tss. The top lever is just a touch to the right of center. This shows on the cross bolt with about .005 to .010 proud of the reciever when locked up on the barrels.

A very strong design which allows a lower profile receiver.

The older SKB like my 605 used the Winchoke system for tubes. So the old invector, winchester, mossberg chokes will all work.

My 85tss uses the new competition chokes made by briley to SKB specs.

I like the aftermarket extended chokes.

I think they are a tough gun to beat and probably would have a better reputation if they would have had a higher price point.

After all, the more you spend, the better you shoot.

The SKB's are not made anymore and not inported into this country, They have not found anyone to make them for the USA Importer yet as far as I have learned.

Pricing should be good purchasing one of them.

Resale value has taken a hit since this happened, there are parts available.

I bought one of the first ones from Jaquas and sent it to the guy in Louisina BOSSIER CITY to have a release installed Big Mistake he literally ruined the trigger and the good people at SKB service dept fixed it for me free and I sold it right away. I won't give his name but everybody knows him, he does not deserve to have his name mentioned on this site, as others have had the same results.

Thanks to the comments made about the gunsmith in LA. my 85TSS went to Mel Hunting and his son in Florida for a release recently. Not only works great but shot in rain a week ago and pulled the buttstock off afterwards. That is some quality workmanship my friends. Was worth every penny. Thank you Mel and Dale. Merry Christmas to you all.

I have an SKB 600 Trap. Mfg around 1975. No tubes. It is choked IM and Full. Was shot weekly for many years. Leaf spring finally gave out, (metal fatiage) in 2005. Terriffic gun smoke tragets. My dad told me it was actually designed for doubles. Cross Bolt system cannot be better. Good Luck.

For those of you who use your SKB's heavily, what would you suggest as a "parts kit" to have on hand to fix whatever turn out to be the most common SKB problems, i.e., firing pins & springs, ejectors & springs, hammers & springs, sears & springs, etc... Considering the purchase of one and just want to make certain I'm doing what's "smart" to keep it up & running...

Talk to the guys in omaha, can buy a set of spare springs firing pins for less than 100.00 shipped that should cover any problem you have if have to use a part just call them and get a replacement. I sure like my 85tss broke 1 bottom spring in 2 yrs otherwise no problems. I CAN LIVE WITH THAT.
