Shipping to California

There was a lengthy thread on this topic, last week. An individual may ship to an FFL holder with nothing else required. The rub comes when it goes from FFL to FFL...the sender must be registered with CA DOJ.

I live in San Diego and have bought several guns from out of State. You only need to hook up the seller of the gun with the FFL in California. The buyer in California needs to provide you (the seller) with an FFL that will do the transfer. Once you guys hook up, the FFL will send you a copy of his license and you need to provide the FFL with a copy of your ID. The buyer sends you the funds, you ship the gun to the FFL. The FFL holds the gun for 10 days and then the buyer can pick it up. That's it.

There are some FFL's that don't really know the law, and are confused what the California requirements really are.

What part of California are you shipping to?

Bucko43 is right, there are lots of FFLs that don't know the law, both in and out of CA. An FFL outside CA does have to be registered with CA, but the process simple and quick, and after he's registered it takes about 10 seconds per firearm to get a shipping number from the CFLC for each transfer. But, an individual can ship to CA without the need for a shipping FFL. The trick is finding a FFL in CA that's smart enough to know his own state's laws. Many of them won't accept a firearm from an individual out of state, due to ignorance.

It's still a BS law, though.

AND, you can send your FFL copy to CALIFORNIA via FAX or EMAIL, as long as a photo copy of your ID (Driver's License) is included. And of course you must put a photocopy of your ID in with the long-gun firearm...Handguns may be different, as the purchaser must take a written test and get a permit to buy or transfer the handgun!..and only one per month...10 day wait must be held on any firearm (not counting antique/military surplus or blackpowder)...LarryB

It depends on what you mean by "firearm"....There are a lot of posters giving advice and not even asking, what your trying to ship to CA.......Advice like that could cause someone a lot of grief.

You cannot just ship any "firearm" to CA......Some guys think only of a shotgun, when the term firearm is used.

You can go to the website above and do a search for an FFL in your area. If there's more than one, call them and get competetive quotes to do the transfer. They all charge different amounts for their part of the transfer. The last time I bought a shotgun it was $35 for the FFL fee and $35 for the dross and California fee.

Once again, you do not need to send the gun to California from an FFL. A private party can ship the gun to the registered FFL after all ID's and information is exchanged.

The last shotgun I bought (about 4 months ago) was purchased from a cop in Texas. He sent his ID to the FFL (emailed it) and the FFL sent him a copy of his FFL license. Gun was shipped the same day!

I just bought a Ruger Revolver from an outfit in Michigan. It was shipped Monday Nov29 2 days ago to my FFL in CA. Nothing more was required than MY FFL faxing his license and Drivers license to the outfit in MI. This outfit is a gunshop and they buy from major distributors so they must have an FFL. They must have been certified by CA which I understand take about 5 minutes.

My gun should be here tomarrow Dec 2 at which time I have to sign the transfer papers and wait 10 days for the DOJ to do their thing.

I found this gun on GunBrokers.com. There were several outfits selling the same gun and some would not ship to CA or even discuss it?. SCREW THEM!!! I got it $100 cheaper from someone who was in business to sell guns, not whine about CA's Laws.

This is the biggest market there is, to exclude it because of your misunderstanding and unwillingness to learn simple proceedures is just plain stupid.

Any business that won't ship to CA is ran by fools, and is losing a significant amount of business simply because they don't understand the laws.

Do you really want to do business with someone like that? I choose NOT!

"Cheaper Than Dirt" is getting crossed off my list in about 6 weeks since they will no longer ship ammo to CA. Well I can buy any of the other crap they sell loaclly for less so why do I need them if they won't fight for my businesss?

Plenty of good ones still out there, and boycotting my state won't change that, just means more business for those that actually deserve it!
