BCNU/John;

Thank you for the referral. I appreciate your kind words.

Mac...;

I tend to agree with Gordy. The unit would be useful only to determine how high the eye needs to be above the rib to get good breaks. As far as cast at the comb determination goes, the same would be true.

The same information could be learned by just mounting and shooting a gun. What the drop and cast at the comb dimensions actually ARE is not as important as how right or correct they are for a particular shooter (unless two guns are being compared.) Then, it is just as easy and accurate to compare the amount of rib that is visible when the gun is mounted.

What information are you after?

Rollin, thanks for your book. Rollin I was just searching for a used citori XT trap stock to butcher down for my wife, I stumbled across this gizmo. I have been able to translate what I read in your book and the info from Neil, havegun. Pat Ireland ect ect. To get my gun set up and shooting sweet. Problem being now is the wife. I got a wenig new american ladies lefthand trap semiinlet stock for browning gold sporting and fitted to her the best i could. She now at least can hold the gun in comfort and with the reduced grip to trigger length she can reach the trigger. Shes 5'2" very small hands. She his gettin better every time she shoots. But shes now asking more questions like what am i suspose to see when I line up the beads to the target. I have had her pattern the gun trying to translate what she sees to where the shot goes. What I cant seem to translate to her is that the gun shoots high the way it is set up @ 13yards 2"above the + and a tad right, she tends to pull the for arm a bit when she fires the gun at rest. I dont notice this as much when she goes for moving targets. she does quit well for the little amount of shooting she does. Getting practice on the trap is tough. Im pushing for a practice day/gun set up day.

Mac;

I would suggest you discuss "sight picture" with your wife, that she focus ONLY on the target and that the barrel will approach the target in her peripheral vision and always be out of focus.

I suspect that she may be aiming her gun in that she is looking or glancing back at the barrel or front bead to establish a spacial relationship between the barrel and the targets. This, of course, will destroy swing smoothness and will slow the swing as well.

As far as her getting used to shooting under targets, my guess is that her mind will eventually realize that although the gun doesn't seem to be pointing ahead or above targets, it actually is.

Shooters who are used to shooting "at" targets often have difficulty pointing their guns below targets. She will eventually get used to it (Hell, I did a number of years ago before realizing that there must be something to having a gun that shoots high.)

If you wife continues to have difficulty, you might consider making a thin add-on rib out of balsa. You could make it the height that makes her gun shoot flat and little by little, reduce the height of the rib to allow her to shoot under targets if that seems like a good idea.

Rollin, thanks. Its tough to verbalize what I see, like you stated I look at the target and from Bench testing and patterning my gun I developed a minds eye of what need to be done. Next week shes going to shoot. I know she can shoot well, shes a doubter. Im going to take the beads off the gun and tell her to just trust her eyes. She also has developed a bad habit of dismounting very quickly. I think the stocks a tad bit long but action tube prohibits any more length reduction.

Gun fit is useful if you have an adjustable stock. When you get it SET then leave it alone.It would be useful to have in a club where shooters can check their mounting has not changed over time.I have used it once, happy enough with its performance.It does what it claims.
